Default MAF Location

Ok, so my performance knowledge is primarily of the MAFless variety. I see a lot of praise to the Callaway Honker in regards to the MAF being relocated to directly in front of the TB.

What makes that a better location?

I think putting the MAF near the TB gets it away from the air filter, where, in some cases, some turbulant air could get at it, giving false and irratic readings & affecting the performance of your engine. This is where the new C6 has the maf.

I agree with the turbulent flow. My 97 has a honeycomb mesh in it to straighten out the incoming air. GM later removed the screen and some books say you can too with a small pick or needle nose.

Yeah, I'm familiar with de-screening the MAF (did a buddies LT1 maf yesterday) but I just was wondering mainly if the reason for moving the MAF was valid or heresay.

what about air temp? would air temp be more consitant further down the line?

I was just reading that some people were experiencing problems when doing the cool air DIY into their air filter because the MAF was reading cool air from outside the car coming from the bottom of the air filter and hot air from inside the engine car coming from the top of the engine.

If the MAF was moved back the air would have time to mix and be one temp maybe????

Hell I dont know what I am talking about I dont even have a MAF

Most tuners will agree that it is better to leave it alone. If you modding the car it is easier to tune the stock MAF. i bought a Granitelli MAF and that was the first thing that the tuner put back to stock. His words were "they are not worth a crap."

I think the question is regarding the location of the MAF not if it should be replaced or not.
