Why does everyone ***** over the fact that the C5 runs cooler with the A/C on? Mine sure does. Turning on the A/C actually changes when the fans come on...essentially keeping the temperature lower than with the A/C off. It does rob power though, but....
Dunno, maybe you have a super car. I've never heard of a car cooling when turn the AC on. The car only gets hotter. The car will cool if you turn the heater on, that is a fact. I'm not gonna argue about this but I would consider yourself lucky for sure because that normally does not happen.
I had my fans reprogrammed when I had the headers/tune done. The car runs 194 pretty much all the time.
I reprogrammed mine myself...with the stock thermostat I dont' go over 205 deg and don't drop below 195 once its warm. I saw a thread on adjusting the thermostat which I might consider...

My car will bounce between 220 and 230 idling in hot weather with a/c off.
With a/c on, it never exceeds 220.
As explained above, the high speed fans are always on at speeds below 35pmh when the a/c is on, so yes, the phenomenon of the engine running cooler with the a/c on is true, simply because of the altered fan operation.
I have not put on my flame suit for awhile so here it goes. Many of us here on the forum have solved our engine temp concerns by installing a 160 degree t-stat and programming the fans to turn on at lower temps. I live in FL and need every advantage I can get when it comes to battling heat and I have had no negative side effects from this mod, just much more reasonable coolant temps.
Find a way to control your fan off / on temps, Chevy sets them way too high for pollution reasons. A cooler thermostat helps too.
I run high 180s regardless of conditions, hiway, intown, drag strip, autocross, summer, winter, etc.
A4 trans cooler also, keeps the trans temps from 140s to 180s.

Ouch! $1200.00 for cleaning the radiator shroud of all the rocks and twigs, etc? Man thats gotta hurt! Did they at least give ya a little kiss and a hug when they were through with ya?
I see 196-198 in on freeways, etc and 205-210 in stop and go on a hot day. I have a LS1WCK water cooling kit I installed about three or four years ago.

I have a 02 Z with a Varam and it was running about 220. So I removed the side plastic on the fenders (the gills) and now its at about 195 at the hottest. Good luck, Lee

Do you have a pic of this? Or are you talking about the openings just in front of the doors?
