I have a vortex cold air box. I know that the MAF screen is still on. What would or will happen if I remove it? Right now, I have stronger acceleration (SOTP) on the top end.
I doubt you wil "feel" anything, but GM did remove the screen on the new 2002 LS6 Z06. Myabe from a smoother airflow and better breathing you pick up a few ponies.
I have to vortex on my 98 & when I removed the screen, I could tell a difference. Some cars slow down. I think some like it & some don't. It's always a debate on here, though! If you want to take a chance, I say try it. Its up to you.
Took mine off..... There is not SOP feel but you can hear that good old moan better. Kinda like the old 4 barrel carbs kicking in !! I loved that sound. Only in the LS1 TB, it sounds even meaner
Mine was removed when I installed the Halltech. I can only say IMHO a major difference in sound just like the old AFB carbs without any aircleaner on. Say a 57 Buick 364 cid carter AFB no air filter WOT waht a sucker sound. :seeya
I've got the RM Racing Twin Flow on my '98. Should I remove the screen? If I do, can I put it back on or this a permanent mod? What's holding that little sucker in there? I didn't really look that closely at it when I installed the Twin Flow.

Dave
Dave I removed mine on my 99. it did not hurt anything..and SOP seemed better... it screen seems to have been pressed in.. I ruined mine taking it out.. I stuck a wide blade screw driver through it.. and pryed it out..
you can take it out without destroying it but tapping it out from the inside using a piece of woor or a rubber mallet..
Re: question about stock MAF screen (Drop_Top_Dave)
Drop Top Dave,
My opinion is that I wouldn't remove it. I've heard of individuals with Twin flow intakes getting surging from removing the MAF screen due to turbulent air. I don't have any personal experience with this since I have a Halltech, but just thought I would give my $.02.

IMO dont remove the screen if you want to try some bigger maf ends with no screen that might work. I had a 97 with a twin flow and no screen and got lean codes P0171 and P0174 as soon as I switched over to the Vortex no codes ever.
