I've got a 2000 FRC MN6 (obviously:-) with 11500miles on it and have been having an annoying shifting problem. When I least expect it and always in 1st gear; I will have come to a stop, shifted into 1st gear - then as I begin to release the clutch to pull away, I'll get one heck of a grind until I realign, redo the shift into 1st. What really bothers me, it sometimes happen in heavy traffic which could be dangerous. The problem is quite random and doesn't happen every-time I take the Vette out.
What am I doing wrong? Is it the trans? Any help will be appreciated.
I could be wrong, but that definitely sounds like a problem with the trans. I also have a Y2K FRC and had a smiliar problem (it would grind shifting from 3rd to 4th but not from 2nd to 4th).
sounds like your first shift fork or first gear synchronizers are not happy! The very first thing that I would recommend doing is changing the tranny fluid and while your there, up grade to Synthetic ATF vise the standard ATF. I'm not saying this is a 100% fix but,, the C5 transmissions seem to respond well to good clean fresh ATF!
If that doesn't take care of it, check the shifter and housing to make sure that there isn't anything wrong there. When I up-graded to my KIRBAN aftermarket shifter, I greased the shift rod inside the housing and it seemed to make a difference. I used a synthetic white grease inside the shifter housing.
Thats just about all you can do other than disassemble the tranny and inspect it, then replace what ever is wrong. Could be a bent shift fork or a bad synchro. Try the fluid replacement first! It's a cheap and simple first move and you never know!

I think it might be normal for this car. Mine has always done it from time to time in 1st and reverse since new. Try engagaging the clutch in neutral first, then disengage and shift into gear.
