Both the owner's manual and GM Service Manual say approximately 6.5 quarts with filter. However, much will depend on how well the system was drained when removing the old oil.

I had always heard that it was better to underfill than overfill. Old wive's tale?

it's not overfilling .. and the windage tray helps prevent the oil from splashing so dont worry bout it.
plus the manual also states if you're racing or "driving competitively" you should put 7 quarts in ..

Oil Volume
One more thing - make sure the rear end is higher than the front during the oil change or you won't get all the old oil out! Then, since it really is empty, use 7 quarts.

Exactly! Did mine last night, but my buddy has my jack so I had to drive up onto the rhino ramps. Needless to say, the front was higher than the rear, so I put 6.75 quarts of the new stuff (Amsoil 5w40) in.
