...I was doin some work on the car where I lowered the mufflers and now one of the studs dissapeared. It seems they are interconnected as I tried manipulating the other stud to get the stud to poke back through but no luck. Any suggestions? Can I get another stud?
The two studs are connected on a flat bar that is supposed to be "glued" to the inner surface of the square bumper tube. I guess a lot of them are not attached like they are supposed to be. If you have one of the studs still extending through the hole, start by treading a nut on it before you accidentally push it up into the tube too. If you can get a hold of one stud, you should be able to manipulate it to where the other stud will line up and come through. You kind of have to push the exposed stud up into the bumper a bit to get the other stud to line up and fall back through the hole. I hope my description makes since and helps.
Last year when installing catbacks, we had to take part of the rear fascia cover off so that I could get to the open end of the square tube to get the two studs and bar out when both pushed into the tube. We then wrapped fishing line around each stud and fished one end of the line through the far hole, pulled the studs and bar into the tube and fooled with both ends of the fishing line until we were able to get the studs lined up with the holes. Now whenever we take off the rear hanger for anything, we always put the one nut back on before taking off the other nut, just to make sure we don’t go through this again. It was a real pain
You should never have to do anything with those hangers when working on your exhaust. I've changed my cat backs several times from stock to Borlas, to Ti's, and now to Bassani's and an X-pipe and I've never had to touch the rear hangers. An alignment needs to be made at the bolted pipe joint.
Great to hear (well, not of your bad experience).. Guess I'll have to poke around to see if I can fish the stud out. Makes me wonder why these weren't welded to begin with.
