I am getting ready to put new GM Bushings on my rear Z51 sway bar on a 99 coupe. Do you think it is necessary to repaint the worn area and apply grease to the bushings when I install them? Or is the bushing installed over the bear metal ok? I am replacing them because they were "creaking". Thanks.
You definately want to grease the bushings, and make CERTAIN you've tightened the bracket, It seems to work best to sung the bolts then torque each half way then torqe each to the final (30ft lbs?) I used a lithium grease on my poly bushings.
My buddy got some aftermarket bushings that have a liner of cloth or something that is supposed to hold grease better. I wouldn't bother painting the bar, but I doubt it would make any difference so if it makes you feel better, go for it!
I had the samme creaking noise, and it was driving me nuts! Got new bushings, and installed them with energy suspension grease from autozone. Problem solved.
