Ok background, I have a Hurst shifter and when I did the MOD I put half of a tennis ball on the shaft as an isolator. Now my first thought on the problem I am going to describe is that the tennis ball was catching on the now upside down rubber isolator and basically keeping me from pulling the shifter far enough to engage 6th...MIGHT still be the problem, need to trim the tennis ball a bit and find out.
This has happened on occasion in fourth as well which leads me to a combination of the ball catching and me kind of lazy shifting into 6th, if I hang on tight and pull all the way back never a problem....
Now heres the other piece of the puzzle, back in 2003, my reverse lockout solenoid went and I went from 4th to reverse at 72MPH, this as you can imagine stripped out reverse quite a bit ha ha, at that time GM rebuilt 5th 6th and R with new gears and synchros. And I work for GM but I will ask the dumb question like what are the odds that something is wrong with the rebuild. I will say this problem is definitely post hurts, which was actually 2.5 years ago, and is fairly recent like the past 6 months, and it does not occur that frequently. I would really think that anything internal would be consistent and worsening....
So please let me know if you have had a similar experience etc... tomorrow after work I am going to mod up if not completely remove my tennis ball, I had myself so convinced that was it that I was pulling the ball up before every 5 6 shift h aha... ok enough for now..
My experience is that problems related to tranny rebuilds show up within the first 1k miles. I think you are on the right track. Make sure the shifter adjustment bolts are tight.
I would also do a ZERO adjustment on the shifter linkage. There is or was a small L shaped pin attached to the front of the shifter housing. When the shifter is in netural, the pin should slide into the hole in the front shifter snout.
Does your aftermarket shifter have shifter stops??
If so,,make sure that they are adjusted out of the equasion!!
While your in there, I would also make sure that the shift rod and housings are properly lubricated.
Well the quick try was remove the tennis ball, was not that, I was convincing myself something was wrong with the 6th synchro, but sometimes 2 or 4 pop out too like it can't get quite far enough back, this weekend I will go ahead and open it all up and see what is poking around in there. Also if I am super ambitious I can toss the stocker back in there temporarily and see if that solves the problem, maybe it is just an issue with the hurst...can't remember, I know it has side to side springs, but is there a fore aft adjustment in the hurtst as well???
mine pops out of reverse all the time it seems like its just grabbing the edge of the gear is there any adjustment that can fix this its stock by the way. Dana

If it is happening in 2,4 & 6, then you need to check or remove the rear stops from the Hurst. They aren't needed anyway, but if they are loose...
