I may have made a dumb mistake here. Hopefully you guys can straighten me out.
I just got a pair of LG Street LTs. I ordered the "headers only to tie into the stock pipes" option, and now that I have the car apart, I'm having a tough time understanding how this works. Here are my issues:
-It looks headers end right where the stock cats are.
-Even if I can cut the pipe off at a point where the header reaches it, it looks like it's the wrong diameter to slip on.
-If I took it to a muffler shop to get it welded together, stainless and carbon steel can't be welded.
My 97 is at the exhaust shop right now. I bought used TPIS lt's two weeks ago. No Flanges. I wanted to do it all myself. I got the headers in and wanted to use the stock cats to reduce noise, smell, etc. I did cut the cats off where I measured they would slip in to the 3 inch collectors. The stock cat pipe is almost the same size and will not fit. My solution is I'm getting flanges welded onto the lt's and they are going to weld and mate flanges on the stock cats. Then you have a removeable section if you want to go straight headers or straight pipes in the future or at the track. I drove it to the shop last night without that section. It sounded like a dirt track car on a Sat. night hot lap session. You get two really nice back fires when you shift from 1st to 2nd and then again 2nd-3rd. Sorry if you live between my house the exhaust shop. Good luck.

anyone gut the stock cats?? I don't want to ruin them and not be able to go back. I was tempted to just smash a long crowbar through the cat material to free up some flow.

Don't bother for the 5-8 hp gain. You will get more noise and stink. keep the cats and remain emissions legal also. JMHO
Calling Lou is your best bet, but I'd recommend getting the LG X to go with your headers.
The problem down the road will be you have a "custom" X pipe that won't work with anything else.
You won't be able to sell it and if you want to swap out for an off road X or hi flow catted one, you're still stuck with a set up that is unique to itself and you'll have to pay again for another custom job.

The stock piece that I have slides directly into my Corsa X pipe. It is "custom" but it will easily mate up to all x pipes, and high flow cats if I decide to go that way in the future. I guess its a balance of cost and how long you want to keep your car taken apart in the garage. Pics soon and you will see what I mean.
