hey guys
so, my engine seems to be eating a lot of oil these days... i filled it up 7 qts (427ci) like normal after my oil change. about 500 miles later, "low oil level" comes up on the DIC. sure enough, the dipstick says its down. filled up 2.5 qts.
heres the problem. whenever i start the car, she puffs out a small cloud of smoke. or if i come to a light, idling, she puffing smoke. Checked my oil again today, down 1 qt. this was about 200 miles after refilling last time.
I have a catch can, goes from the top of the motor to catch can, to intake. and i have a breather filter in the oil cap location as well.
any ideas?? what should i check? with my exhaust only consisting of mufflers, the fumes are killing me. Not to mention, looks very embarrasing in front of all my car folks...
You may start with compression check, see if all cylinders are within a few PSI of each other. Easy enough to do. If it is a bad oil ring, compression check may not pick it up however.
How do the spark plugs look? It won't be good news if they are black.
Hows the radiator fluid, is it lower than normal? Cracked head maybe, bad gasket somewhere. How has engine temps been lately?
ideas.
1.Broken ring[s]. Done when engine was assembled.
2. Valve stem seals ? This is a common cause when oil smoke is seen at startup.
3. Oil return[s] not working, and flooding the valve seals?
4. Engine tune has washed the rings out?
FWIW, I saw a thread on another forum, about ported Dart heads, doing this. [BIG arguement!!]
thanks for the tips guys.. will start on the few tests...
Oldgeezer, what specs do u need? let me know.. thanks!
Aj
that if you posted the combo, folks might have more ideas....
Also, there's a post on LS1 board that has the same problem[s]. His is a qt in 200, and has alot of smoke to go with it.
The posters there are suggesting a change in how the PVC is routed, using a change in the valley cover..
ok, well mine is a c5r 427. i have a filter breather in the oil fill location. the one that PFYC sells... i also have a catch can, which runs from the air line from the top of the motor to the catch can, then to the intake. the catch can is empty, so its not going from there...
