Hi, I've got a 2000 c5 coupe. It came stock with 3.42 gears. I was wondering if I were to go with 3.90 or 4.10 gears, would I just be able to swap out the ring and pinion or would I have to get a whole new diferential?
You can do either one. You can get the whole rear assembly or just have the gears swapped. I have done both before and had good luck with both.. Are you a manual or a 6-speed. I may be inerested in buying your rear end or just the gears.. Let me know..
nitrouscharlie, I was hoping to just be able to find a tranny shop that will just swap out the gears. I have a 6 speed and I was told that if I wanted to swap 3.42 for 3.90 or 4.10 that I would have to swap out the entire differential, but maybe they were not used to working on vettes. I'll call another place tomorrow and ask them about it, they are known to do very good job on vettes. Anyways, once I find out wether I can just swap ring and pinion or have to re-do the entire differential I'll let you know. I have about 23,000 miles on these 3.42 just to let you know. Thanks for the info.
Call Phill at DTE! He will give you the correct info. C5 differentials are not your run of the mill GM diff! If the shop that you use doesn't set it up properly, your going to have a very unhappy rear! Just make sure that who ever you get to do the rear, does it correctly!
If I were going to have my differential repaired, I would have DTE do it.
