I have an 01 ZO6 and was thinking about the mass air meter. Could you remove the screen? Say with a drimal tool? I know they sell aftermarket ones, but if I can do it and save money than thats free HP. Please help, as I don't want to make a big mistake. Feel free to PM me as I have to go to work for the day. Thanks in advance.

It has a screen for sure. I didn't pay much attention to it, because I was busy tring to install an intake. Would the best way to go about it be the drimal? Has anyone else tried it?

The screen should just "push" out. It's been a while since I did mine, but it just about a min.

The '01 Z has a screen on the MAF. The screened MAF has different values in the MAF calibration table for the frequency cells. Removing the screen will skew the frequency slightly lower due to an altered metered vs unmetered ratio of air flow through the MAF. The lower frequencies will fool the PCM into thinking there is less air flowing so it will compute the amount of fuel and timing accordingly. This will cause the engine to run slightly leaner unless recalibrated. Whether it works to your benefit or throws a code seems to be by chance. Some that have done it have no issues and a little more power, some throw codes.
---
If you want to remove the screen you can by getting something in the MAF like a wooden dowel, I used a new pencil, from behind and push it out slowly going around the perimiter being VERY careful not to touch the thermistors. This way, if you throw a code or want to go back for some reason you can just push it back in from the front.

the 2001 Z06 did indeed have the MAF screen. GM didn't remove it on the Z06 until 2002.

Just use a small pick to grab it and then pull it right out.

If you push it out you can't put it back. Why not get a set of aftermarket MAF ends? They flow better than the stock ones with or without the screen AND if this mod doesn't work for you, you can put the stock ends back on, screen intact, no damage done.

You CAN put it back in, if you remove it carefully. I've done it on mine.
Also, an '01 Z has an 85mm MAF, they don't come apart like a 75mm MAF, and nobody makes 85mm ported ends for them because of this.

GM went with a screenless MAF in 02 for the Z's. Before that, GM was making one MAF fit all. But the C5 doesn't really need the screen due to the straight air flow of the intake system. The screen was really made vehicles like trucks that had too much turbulence in it's air flow path.
O1' Z06 (385 HP) 85mm screened MAF
02' Z06 (405 HP ) 85mm no screen MAF.

I'm going to try it as soon as my Halltech tric comes in the mail. I'll try a pencil eraser to push it out. Next on the list will be headers and X-pipe. Not looking for much, just 11's in the 1320.
