Default Cranking Issue

Hello Ladies and Gents,

Over the past week, I have noticed a slight issue with my 98 vert. When I go to crank up the car, it turns over fine but never fully cranks. When I try it again 5 seconds later, it cranks up fine. Everything sounds normal, it just doesn't crank on the first attempt.

Could this be a problem with my spark plugs...? Or maybe something with my battery? I don't know, but I would certainly appreciate the help if anyone has insight.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like a similar issue I've been having. When you say it initially it turns over but doesn't fully crank, do you mean it cranks normally but doesn't fire? That's what I've been seeing. It doesn't fire on the first cranking, but if I back off the ignition and try again it fires on the first try.

I'm leaning to 2 possibilities. Either the gas has recently been reformulated with more ethanol than before (which I know it has) and the PCM will take about a full tank before it adjusts the starting parameters, or the battery may be starting to go and provides enough juice to crank but can't get it to fire on the first pass.

Since I've only had about 2 tankfuls of gas since the winter, I'm waiting to see what happens after this tank is used up. I also added some fuel system cleaner.

What your experiencing is a fuel related issue. Sounds like the fuel pump is either not running when you first turn the ignition switch to the ON position or all of the fuel in the fuel line has drained back into the tank and the pump needs to run longer to get pressure and fuel to the injectors.

Try this:

When you first turn the key to the ON position, listen and see if you can hear the fuel pump run for about 2-3 seconds and then stop. The noise of the pump can be heard from what will sound like the rear halo area behind the seat. The PCM will turn the pump on for a couple of seconds to charge up the fuel lines. If that isn't happening, you will have long of on start problems.
