Default Shifter **** removal?

I poped the shift patern cap off and tried to remove the metal tab inside but could not get it out. What gives does this just pull straght up? I tried pliers with no luck it won't come out.

I sprayed the Demon key with WD40 let it sit for a minute. Put towels on the shift ****. Grab the demon key with needle nose vise grips. Place a block of wood on the towel which is on the ****. Put a screwdriver through the vice grips, rest on wood block and pry up. Viola!

This method has never failed me yet and I've used it many times.
