Can c5's be stolen? the years with column lock? Well im sure they can but is it easy or like would the theif have to sit for hours workin on it?
i think hes asking if the car is easy to steal with the column lock BYPASS installed.....
i wish people would proof read and check their spelling before sending their post, sometimes you have to really work at understanding what they are trying to say....
man dont even act like you are confused about this...
im asking if the car is easy to steal with the column lock is on. this is the crap im talking about.
Really, Willa. This question DOESN'T make much sense. First, don't all cars have a column lock--it's just that the Vette has a problem locking when it's not supposed to. Second, haven't you heard of thieves breaking the column to get past the lock, in under 30 seconds? There's no real reason it would be different just because the column lock malfunctions toward the locked side in the Vette.
Your quote above makes it sound like you really don't see why your question flies in the face of common sense. (No flame, I'm just analyzing how it happens that you keep asking questions that generate such negative responses.)
Maybe you should ask Nicolas Cage :D -- "Gone in Sixty Seconds" ... LOL!
Actually, I think with the Pass Key system, it is impossible to hot wire because the computer will not work without recognizing the right key code. They would have to tow it away.

The passkey chip is just a resistor. There are only about 10 or 12 values, and an under-dash bypass is extremely easy to do. All a thief needs is to go to Radio Shack and get the resistors, then makeshift a harness. Ten tries doesn't take too long. I had lots of problems on my GTA--it would fail to properly recognize the resistor, and leave me stranded, about once every two weeks (GM's attempt to leave you stranded before they hit on the excellent column-lock idea.) GM of course would not do anything about it. I finally convinced one Pontiac service tech to "illegally" make and install a bypass for me. Took him less than 60 seconds. Cool what a $20 can do for you...
There are 15 different resistor key values and you have to wait at least 4 minutes after trying each one...I have done the procedure for those that have lost keys and trust me,it takes a long,long,time...Not to mention that you have to have the correct key cut blank to turn the cylinder...
I think it's like most things. A pro could probably steal it pretty quick. I think the biggest theft deterrent on the C5 is the appeal. Most "boosters" want to steal inconspicuous cars like Honda Accords, SUV's, etc.. C5's are harder to steal just because everyone is looking at the car to begin with and they'll notice someone screwing around with one a lot faster than someone hanging around a Honda Accord for a minute or two. There's a lot less risk of being noticed and some other cars are a lot easier to steal. Steal 2 or 3 easy pickins rice commuters and you've made as much money as one C5... a lot easier. The real pros probably just move up to one of the renamed Honda, Nissans or Toyotas (Acura, Infiniti, Lexus) since they cost as much as a C5 anyway. ;)
If you believe those "Dateline" type specials on car thieves anyway...
JUST A SIDE NOTE GUYS, I NOTICED 1 DAY LAST WEEK ON MY CAR THAT THE MOULDING JUST BELOW THE PASSENGER WINDOW WAS FOLDED IN ABOUT 2 INCHES IN LENGTH. NO SCRATCHES ARE ANYTHING DAMAGED ON THE CAR BUT I HAD TO BEND THE RUBBER MOULDING BACK.
NOW WAS THIS SOMEONE TRYING TO USE A SLIM JIM ON THE CAR AND COULDNT GET IN OR THEY WERE SCARED OFF? :mad
Last year, I drove my '99 to the Cinemark at Legacy theater in Plano. After the movie, I noticed that there was an indentation on my window seal on my driver's side. It looked like someone had unsuccessfully used one of those tools to unlock my door. About a week later, the rubber had reformed into it's original shape. No harm done, but it really freaked me out at first!
I've been back since (in both my '99 and my 2002) with no problems.
