My DIC is always set to monitor the oil temp. I'm wondering if it is reading accurately, because I could be driving for 20 minutes or so, and the temp will say 194, if I change the dic for coolant reading and then flip back to oil temp it might now read 210. Run hard for 10 mins, read 223, go back to cruising 5 minutes later, temp reads 205. Can oil heat and cool that quickly, or might there be something wrong with the sensor?
Oil temp fluctuates a lot more than coolant temps do. With oil temp, anything between 200 and 250 is considered normal. It all depends on how hard you're driving the car and how high of rpm's you're running.
Mine typically runs 210-220 in easy (freeway/cruise) driving, but I've seen it hit 255 after really beating on the car in hot temps too. I've done no mods to my cooling system yet, so after I install a low temp Tstat and fan reprogramming, I'd expect to see those temps drop a little.
With modern synthetic oils, there's really no need to worry unless you're consistently running 250+ oil temps....then an oil cooler may be a wise investement.
