Default Need Advice Please

OK Got the car back from dealership, after their recall service on the column lock lasted long enough for me to get home, park the car and try to restart it....got the service column lock...got it back today after harness replacement....last night I ordered the clb from Fred Beans....now question..I assume when i take the knee pad off I'll see the k harness connected to something...do I remove it to apply the clb...does the clb fit into the connections where the k harness was?
Need some help here guys.....

There are pictures on the forum that show how to remove the knee panel and the location of the column lock actuator connector that should help.

The answer to your question is, yes, you will see the Harness K wiring connected between the actuator connector and the connector to the instrument panel wiring harness. You will need to unplug both ends of the Harness K and remove it. The CLB will only have one connector. You connect the CLB to the instrument panel wiring harness connector that you unplugged the Harness K from. (It will only fit one connector) The connector from the column lock actuator is left disconnected.

You must get the service column lock problem repaired first before you install the CLB. If you don't, the installation will accomplish nothing.

You probably already know this, but you can identify the Harness K by tracing the connectors under the steering column to the wiring that has a relay in it, which should be strapped to a bracket to the left of the steering column. The relay in the harness is probably what was defective that caused you to get the service column lock message after the first recall repair.
The way I read your note, the dealer replaced the harness, and you have not gotten the service column lock message a second time. You are just not sure how reliable the factory relays are so you want to replace it with the aftermarket version. If you need to clear the error message, I think the sticky at the top of the page tells you which fuse to pull to reset the BCM.

You are exactly right...the replaced K harness seems to be operating as it should...They removed the locking plate also....but here's my thought's it seems from what I read that the K harness has a failure rate much higher than the CLB does...so for peace of mind...I'm leaning towards replacing the K harness with the CLB..

best to replace the k harness, it's just a matter of when regarding failure.............

Given the poor quality of the relays in the current Harness K kits, I would tend to agree that the CLB is the way to go. GM changed the part number for the kits and they have not been reliable since then.

However, I got one of the "original" Harness K kits with the black relays back when GM was just using them on the recalls on the automatics and installed it in my 04 Z06 a couple of years ago along with removing the lockplate, and it is still working fine. I even removed the lockplate before GM announced they would do it on the manual transmission cars as a recall.
