Default Help me diagnose a problem (please)

I have a 2002 Z06 with 33K miles. I am getting a clicking almost metal on metal sound coming from the rear end (at least it sounds like rear end). I only get the sound at the very beginning of accelaration and especially when I'm rolling in 1st and put it into reverse and accelerate or when I do the opposite from reverse to first.

At first I thought it was coming from the wheel but now I really think it is coming from deeper inside. Any initial thoughts?

Thanks!

TTT anyone? The z06 forum suggested the sway bar could be loose but no go. Any other suggestions? It could be a wheel bearing but why only when first taking off. Plus with 33K miles I'm shocked they would go.

Could be the standard Z06 exhaust rattle. I think there's a TSB out on it.

Do a search.

Not an exhaust issue..

99% sure it is the infamous "loose rear axle nuts" issue.

Basically the splined axles that pass through the rear hubs have a small amount of play, and the nut loosens over time, and when you transition from loading the axle in relationship to the hub it "clicks / pops" etc.

Solution is to clean the axle threads on both sides, loosen or completely remove the axle nuts, spray some lube into the splines, re-tighten the axle nut to the proper torque and your problem is solved.

I agree, Dan_The_C5_Man... Check the rear axles. Could be loose bolts, OR bad CV joint.

Dan, I have never gotten into axles on any car. Could you (in non mechanic speak) explain to me exactly how to clean the axle threads and lube? In other words a picture would be FANTASTIC. Thanks so much!

I don't have any pics handy, but it is straightforward.

Remove the center cap / wheel cover, you'll see the 33mm axle nut and threads.

Clean up the threads w/ a wire brush (they usually get a bit rusty), loosen the nut enough to shoot some white lithium grease into the spline area, re-tighten the nut (approx 120ft lbs).
