Take it by an Auto Zone or other major parts retailer and have them put an OBDII reader on it. I had an engine light and suspected that it was the result of some water in the gas or an overheating incident (had a Wal Mart bag stuck on the radiator). They checked it and said it was an O2 sensor. Had them clear it and have had no problems. If it IS an O2 sensor, they aren't cheap, but they aren't that hard to change. There are two pair...one in each side of exhaust header and one each side of exhaust near the cats. It is suggested to replace both sides of which ever bank you need to replace.
It is NOT the O2 sensor. From the 98 Service Manual:
1. Check the AIR pump fuses ( Mini fuse #19 and Maxi Fuse #50)
Does the AIR pump turn?
2. Check for restrictions/blockage or a disconnect in the AIR hoses / pipes
The conditions for setting the DTC (P0410) are:
1. HO2S voltage does not go below 222 mV for 1.2 seconds
2. Short term fuel trim does not go above a predetermined amount.
Actions taken when the DTC sets:
1. The PCM illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the second consecutive ignition cycle thaqt the diagnostic runs and fails
2. The PCm records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The first failure data is stored in the failure records.
Conditions for clearing the MIL/DTC:
1. The PCM turns the MIL OFF after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostice is run and does not fail
2. A last test failed (current DTC) clears when the diagnostic runs and does not fail
3. A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles.
4. Use a Scan tool to clear the MIL/DTC
You may need to test the AIR pump relays (micro relay #40 and #33)
There is much more, its in Section 6 of the service manual. I don't have it electyronically, so let me know if you need more info.
I had similiar codes on my 01 FRC A4 and what was found at the dealer was that previously when a battery started to leak that the acid leaked onto the vacuum/air lines running beneath the battery box and caused a malfuntion in the "Air system" and set code P0410 repeatedly. I would reset the DIC and it would continue to set itself shortly after I started the car and it was warming up. Not saying that this your problem, but just another thing to check. I also had the steering column code set during this time frame. I had all the lines replaced and a harness replaced and the problem is now fixed. Good luck!
