i just bought 18x9.5 wheels from bob at house of wheels for my fronts. i got 275x40r18 goodyear supercar tires to to put on the wheels. i mounted them on the car and it rubs slightly when i turn. anyone else have 275x40's in the front or know if there is anything i can do besides get new tires. thanks,
casey
I can't speak as to sufficient clearances other than to say you should have mounted a 35 profile tire, not a 40, although I'm still a bit surprised that it rubs. Are you lowered? What is the offset of these wheels compared to OEM? Good luck.
im not lowered in the front if a am its not much.im lowered in the back. that was the work of the previous owner. i would of prefered to have a 35 but i got a good deal on the 40's. i dont know the offset i think i remember hearing 60mm but that might be for my rears. its not a bad rub i can still drive but it just bothers me i dont want to mess anything up. i might have to put them on the back and burn them up a little bit. lol
i think i found the main problem with the rub the hard way. inside the wheel well behind the fog lights there is a tube about 3 inches thick that is attatched to the wheel well i guess so air can flow through and cool the brakes. well one of them busted off when i turned the wheel. it really wont effect anything at all but it still pisses me off.
Check your suspension for cuts as well. There used to be a guy here on this forum using ElDiablo99, and he had wide wheels that actually cut into the front suspension. Scary stuff.

Well there ya go! Buying the wrong aspect ratio tires, or offset wheels because you got a deal! That's a recipe for regret's, anyway 40's are too tall 'look wise'. IMHO!
i guess ill have to bite the bullet and pay for another pair of fronts. unless i can find someone to trade me. i have talked to people that had 275x40's on an 18 in the front and it worked thats why i went ahead with it. here is a few pictures of it. please excuse the dirtyness..
im wondering if i lower it a little bit if it will fit better inside the wheel well...
Up the spring rate up front, and you'll eliminate the rubbing. This will make it look better than having it raised off the ground so much, that you can enter a monster truck battle.

thank you for the advice i will look into that first thing tomorrow.
Sorry, i should have been more detailed. Increasing the spring rate up front means replacing the front spring. Which means about $475 for the spring from Vette Brakes(they give 10% discount to forum members), then the installation (which is a few hours).
I went to 11's up front and had major rubbing issues, on semi to hard turns. I messed around with shock settings and ride heights for several months. And the ONLY thing that eliminated the rubbing was increasing my spring rate up front. This will increase the handling of the car, but will also make it slightly rougher of a ride. Meaning you'll feel the bumps a little more. So it depends on what you really want to do with the car, street only or some limited track time. With my spring rates and the rest of my track suspension, my car is still pleasantly driveable on the street. NOTE: I have a 97 Coupe(torch red) as well
well its not that they are 275's the width is fine. but its that the profile is 40 i should of gotten a 30 or a 35. not to mention the previous owner had the car lowered and had 17's up front so now the 18's stick up a little higher and it rubs towards the bottom.
You should not even consider changing springs because your wheels/tires rub. Change the wheels and tires. Leave the springs alone on a street car, especially if this is your first nice car.
Sell the tires/wheels, buy something that fits.
Think about what could happen when you're enjoying your new car, you now have stiffer front suspension, you hit a bump or pothole in turn, your're doing a little "handling", now the car is stiffer, and it rubs.....
