I used Top Engine cleaner. You have to soak the head for a while and the stuff is vile, but it works great. I used a big bucket, poured 2 cans of the stuff over the heads, and covered it while it was in the hot sun and let it sit all day. Every 1/2 hour or so I uncovered them and 'basted' them. When the time was up I removed them, hosed them down, and they were as clean as new.

One thing I thought I should mention. I read in the manual not to use a ScotchBrite pads. The reason given is it creates such a fine dust that the oil filter can't remove it and 'engine damage' can result.

Having said that, I've read of lot's of guys that have used it with no problems.
Should be, it's all metal. But since the heads are off, it's an ideal time to disassemble everything and check for bent valves, worn seats, out-of-spec springs, etc. It's easy to do now, and the cost is essentially zip. Much more work later, if things are not as they should be.
