Default Members with flycutting tools....

Hey guys, I know this is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone had the flycutting tools(minus the heads) that they would rent out?

I have a set of old LS1 heads so all I need are the cutting tools....

I'm cutting for AFR's milled to 59cc for a G5X3/114.....

If anyone can help, please shoot me a PM.

TIA

I thought I read a post that LG rents the cutter. Check with them unless you already know that then just disregard...

Before flycutting, check w/ LG to see if you need to. I'm pretty sure that for that cam and even though your heads are milled to 59cc, that you do NOT need to flycut your pistons - LG can and will tell you for sure, but check w/ them first - may save you some time.

I'm pretty sure you have to flycut the intake .080" with that setup. Also, you can't use and old head for flycutting unless the seats have been cut out to accomodate the tool. The tool is much bigger and fatter than the valve and you can't bolt the block to the head with stock seats.

If LGM is out of tools, PM me, I may be able to help.

Ok Guys, I just went thru this myself. I rented the tool from LG. They ship you an old head with seats removed and a fly cutting tool. The cost was $169.95 rental fee and a $300 refundable core charge. It took them about 4 weeks to finally get it shipped to me. Also the head and tool are only set up for doing the intake valves, NOT the exhaust.

Also, they explained to me it's standard practice at LG to flycut the pistons for their G5X3 (112LSA and 114LSA) and larger cams. It's so easy to do and reduces risk of piston-to-valve contact if you miss a shift or grab the wrong gear during a downshift. Hope this was helpful information.

Actually if you cut the back of the tool at a 45 it will work in a standard head without any modifications to the head. I don't know why they don't make the tool like this to start with?

I tried to rent the LG tool also. But all I got from LG was jerked around. They made lots of promises but never followed through. After waiting and waiting on LG I finally ordered my own tools from Thunder Racing and bought a used set of LS1 heads to cut up and use as the tool holder. Once I got the tools and looked at them I thought if they were cut on the back like a vale they would fit. I cut the back and sure enough they fit perfectly so I didn't have to cut up the heads I bought.

I'm still not convinced you need to flycut the pistons - I agree you can do it "just to be sure," but I talked w/ LG, and they said I didn't have to - hope they know what they're talking about, cause I'm not planning on flycutting when I install the same setup referred to above.

Just to further clarify, when I called and discussed with LG, my understanding was that you do NOT have to flycut your pistons to use the G5X3 cams. But they mentioned that as a standard practice at LG, they DO flycut just to provide an added margin of safety. As I understood it, the risk is on deceleration or grabbing a wrong gear while downshifting that could possibly cause a piston-to-valve contact. So I guess we all have to use our own best judgement to make the decision to flycut or not. I figured it can't hurt considering how much money I've already invested in my motor.

Guys, thanks for the comments....

It is absolutely neccessary to notch the pistons when running a G5X3 with 59cc AFR heads. As a matter of fact the stock 66cc AFR's require a notching according to LG, but stock 64cc Z06 heads will clear, apparently due to the valve size???

To those who have tools, yet uneasy about renting them, I have no problem sending you "core" money via Paypal as long as it's refundable, plus a rental fee of course. I'm just trying to avoid the headaches I've heard about with LG, and of course the excess shipping cost of a "to/fro" shipment of a head....

Thanks Guys!
