My engine light came on yesterday so I ran the codes to see what might be wrong and I got code P0430 H C which to my understanding is a "Catalyst System Low Efficiency" history and current code. I noticed a whiff of that rotten egg smell, not bad could just barely make it out during acceleration. Does this mean that I need new cats, the car has 51K? If I do should I go with high flow cats in preparation of installing headers in about 6 months and finally how much HP do high flow cats give you with headers over stock cats?
I know lots of questions for one thread but I have always gotten tons of good advice on here so I thought I would go to the well again
If I was going long tubes and high flow cats in 6 months I'd just clear the code every few days. Generally a 430 does mean it's time for a new cat(s) so spend your hard earned cash on the high flows and not another set of stock cats.
If you go with headers, a tuner will likely delete the 2nd O2's anyhow, why both fixing it at this point. You could have it turned off now or wait. Another approach is the center cat pipe is all one piece, there are guys literally giving them away. You might be able to pick one up cheap or free in the for sale section.

If you go by GM flow chart for that code, it states to check for damages converter and H02 sensor. If all looks ok, then replace converters.
You can get them replaced under warrenty, due to that fact they fall under the Federal Emission law. They are covered for 8yrs/80K whichever comes 1st. same for your PCM. It will have to go to the dealer for the fix, but it should not cost you
That is how it is at my dealer and I'm in St.louis, and are smog laws are not that Hitler .

This means your stock cats are toast.
I had a similar problem, but made the mistake of gutting them....DO NOT DO THAT!!!
Anyway, I hit up www.dezod.com, scooped some Melrose long tubes and Random Tech X-pipe w/ cats to keep it emissions legal for good ol NYS.
