This is fast becoming my cars greeting every other morning!!
Hi guys, new here and the guys in "general forum" said to try you all here, does anyone know what causes this?? I have a black 1998 coupe - bought it about 10 months ago and in my opinion is a better daily driver than the C4 she replaced! In the time I have gotten to know her she has had a steering sensor go (big bucks to replace!!) but everything else is mint. Until now, this message keeps coming on - so I pull the key (and rebel that I am) wait only 5 seconds and start her up and she is fine! I get no other messages and she drives fine. Is this something that is a simple fix or am I going to have to bend over and take it at the dealers???
Thanks in advance!

Read the sticky at the top of the Tech section that say "Steering Column Lock Faqs". There are also about 522,000 threads on this topic. You can search under column lock, CLB, pull key, etc.

Do not even bother taking it to a dealer to have fixed. Just buy a Column Lock Bypass (CLB) from ThunderRacing.com for <$60 and install it yourself. This will eliminate the potential for the steering column to lock up on you.
I had the same message that you had and I had to have mine towed to the dealer twice because the steering column eventually locked up after the message appeared. They did nothing for me both times it was there.
I have heard of others installing the CLB and still receiving the "pull key...wait 10 seconds" message, but their steering column hasn't locked up though. Good luck
I did read the stickie and found out that the steering column does NOT lock so the previous owner must have either had the recall done or did his own thing, but this message is just starting up, I thought maybe it was related to something else?? I will search the database for the "key" words, since there are so many posts about the same thing, misery loves company!
Thanks again.

I always preach to install the CLB and will not stop. If you don't have it installed already it's only a matter of time before you'll be stranded. Don't bother with the dealer. To me it's a crap shoot.
However, you could have other issues which could cause you message to appear, battery, ground locations, key, etc.
First, I'd order the CLB and check the other possible problems while the CLB is on order.
Just remove your knee bolster by removing four #15 torx screws and the bolster pops off. The CLB is a small black box and it should be just underneath the steering column.
Here is a link which shows you how to install the CLB. It has pics and is an easy 10 minute access. http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=24
the previous owner already installed the CLB??
Is it an easy check or a weekend thing(taking dash apart)?
Here's one way to know if they had the CLB installed or the latest recall since you say the wheel stays unlocked (I'm assuming that's the case when you pull the key out).
If you hear the locking motor move in the steering column when you pull the key out, but the wheel is unlocked, then the GM Recall (4006C) was performed since it still provides power to the locking actuator even though the locking plate is removed.
If you don't hear the motor move, then you either have the CLB installed (since motor is disconnected) OR, the lock actuator is stuck in the UNLOCK position which could result in you getting the DIC Message. Installing the CLB would address this if that's the case.
Other than that, as indicated above, removing the lower knee trim panel and looking at the connector would tell you that the CLB is in fact there.
One other thing that can generate that message is that the key contacts in the ignition switch is dirty and so it can't read the Pass Key pellet from the key. You can try cleaning the keyhole with a small pipecleaner and some alcohol.
If you read the sticky closely you will see that a dirty pellet resistor in your key will cause this symptom. To confirm try using your other key. Meanwhile clean the resistor with alcohol and a wipe. This should fix the problem if it is related to the key resistor being dirty.
I do hear the motor when taking out the key so its nice to know that the recall was done (or is it???!!LOL)
I cleaned the key, very dirty, always in my pocket, more full of dirt and lint than my belly button! Low and behold NO MESSAGE, the other clean (aka unused key) got the same results. Thanks guys I really appreciate the help and advise!!

My experience... periodic "pull key" messages (not often)
Cleaned keys, no help.
Bought CLB from Thunder Racing, easy install, actually made my problem much worse and had to remove... Thunder Racing says "some cars react that way", offered to refund.
BTW, GM has done the recall on my automatic.
Bill Curlee thinks replacing the ignition switch may be the answer.
