20,000 miles on a 2000 6 speed. Tranny will not shift to 2nd gear unless I hold the shifter back firmly in position. If not held back the gears grind . Once it does engage it is fine--does not pop out even under hard acceleration. No noises or grinding once engaged.
Consults with local tranny shops reveal this will be a major BIG BUCK repair due to very high number of hours needed to remove, repair and reassemble the tranny due to the unique vette drivetrain configuration.
My question is-- is this a common problem with C5 6 speeds? Do I repair or should I begin to investigate switching to a differet unit?
The car is essentially stock. It is a daily driver and run WOT through the gears a couple of times a week.I had planned to run the car in the Carolina Corvette Challenge drag series occasionally as a bracket car.
Appreciate any advice.

It could also be the shifter needing alignment. I've never had to do it, but the process is fairly simple. Check out this thread at www.corvettemechanic.com :
Thanks guys. Really appreciate the info.
Vettedrmr I certainly will try the shifter alignment and let you know whether it makes a difference. Great info !!!
FYI I had just installed an aftermarket shift **** a short time ago. Who knows? Maybe that could be it.
Thanks again.

Mike[VetteDrmr]I worked all afternoon to get access to the shifter alignment. You need take off the entire front dash portion of the console first.Once I researched and completed this, getting the neutral adjustment pin to snug down was next to impossible. Needed to remove the entire shifter , loosen the 3 torx fasteners, insert the pin which establishes the correct position for the shifter when in neutral, tighten the fasteners, and reassemble the shifter.
BUT after all of that shifter was much better!!! However it still is not fully resolved. Probably will need to pay the bucks and get the tranny repaired professionally.
Soooo if you guys experience a similar problem, I would suggest you do try this first[even though it is time consuming] as it made a noticeable difference in my shifter although it did not succeed completely in my case.
Thanks again for the advice,
Gene
