Default Weatherstrip Adhesive?

I'm going to replace the left targa top weatherstrip and would like to know what type of adhesive to use, so that I can avoid being 'hosed over' by the dealer for a simple install...thanks.

3M is what I use for the weather strip. It's about 10 bucks at most auto parts stores. Besure and use the cleaner on both the weather strip and the part your sticking it to.

Thanks for the reply, as my local Chevrolet dealer wasn't really helpful...unless, of course, I wanted to spend about a hundred bucks for them to install it themselves.

3M is the best. Used it restoring my old pickup on all new seals.

Is this a liquid glue type adhesive or that double sided tape stuff? Also, what cleaner are you referring to? Is that also a 3M product?

I need the same stuff for my rubber upper hood seal which is coming off. Also I have some rear trunk mirror panels which are coming unstuck and the 3M tape isn't working. I need something more potent I think.

Thanks for any help.

The adhesive is like thick toothpaste. The 3M cleaner is a liquid. Best to get it too.

The 3M weather strip adhesive (black) is a contact adhesive. It’s the best! Just follow the instructions. It takes about 24 hours for the glue to cure properly. Take your time and be patient! Good luck!

The best cleaner to use is also 3M and is called All Purpose Cleaner & Adhesive Remover (many uses for this stuff). The original 3M weatherstrip glue is yellow in color and affectionately known in the trade as "elephant snoot" .

In North Carolina we call it Gorilla Snot.

The yellow 3M glue is fine for holding engine gaskets in place for reassembly. I would recommend it for installing new weather stripping on the car though. That is unless you have a yellow car! Even then I wouldn’t use it.

The product that I finally ended-up using was Permatex 'Super Weather-Strip Adhesive' 2 FL OZ - Item #80638/80BR that I purchased from one of our local Pep Boys stores.
