Default Shocks

Seeking info on changing out the Non-Adjustable shocks on the rear off a 99. I have changed shocks on "regular" cars in the past, but not on a Vette.
(w/o Electronic Suspension)

Anything special I need to know ?

Any one that could scan those pages in the manual and email it to me?

Thanks in advance

First of all if you have the non-adjustment shocks the C5 shocks are the same as changing regular shocks on any car.
Second you can post in the search section of this forum to look for step by step on changing shocks..
Good luck

I just did this on mine about a month ago.

On the front: to drop the front shock you will have to drop the lower A-arm. Disconnect the swaybar, shock bolts and the bolt on lower A-arm. You need to take a jack with a piece of wood or a large socket and jack up on the spring to take the pressure off. Then when all is disconnected, use the spring's pressure to disconnect the lower A-arm bolt. Drop shock out from the bottom. The hardest part is taking the upper nut off. Takes 2 wrenches, one for the nut and one for the rod (10 mm I think) Take your time here, you'll have too. lol The re-install is just straight forward.

On the back: This is easier than the front. Take out the bottom bolt. Jack up on the A-arm to compress the shock. Take some tie straps and tie the shock so it will stay closed (short). Lower the jack. Now, on the top you will see 2 bolts on a bracket. Take those out. Now you can work the shock out from the bottom. Once you have the top bracket changed out to the new shock, compress the shock and tie it down. The re-install is pretty much straight forward.

once you get started it pretty easy. I tried to find a way to make the fronts work with the tie straps but you can't get the shock out without the A-arm out of the way.

Great stuff,

Thanks to all.

I can't visualize what you would loop the tie wrap over on the top side of the rear shocks to compress and hold them?
The top is just a shaft with a threaded top.........right ?

Use two ties – loop one over the stud forming a small ring that will not slide over the upper portion of the shock.

I did the fronts last week and simply used a pry bar to compress the shocks and popped them out.

No need to drop the A-arm. Compress the shock via a jack under the rotor assembly, zip tie (industrial strength) shocks, lower the jack and the shock can be turned and removed.

Amen on the "industrial strength" Ty-Wraps.

Be careful if you jack under the front rotors. If the wheel hub rotates while you have your hands in near the shock it could get really ugly.

Edit: Of course, if you read the instructions and jack under the ball joint this won't be a problem, lol.
