I believe you are referring to Traction Control, not Active Handling.
If you press the button and hold it down for about 3-4 seconds you'll put the car in "Competition Mode".......this means that your Traction Control is off, but your Active Handling remains on. To undo, simply press and hold the button again and the car should return to both systems being "on"
If I read your post correctly it sounds like the system is changing by itself while the car is running? If so, that's a whole nother issue. However, it doesn't matter what mode you have the car in but once you turn the car off and then re-start it and will always default back to T/C on and Active Handling on. You would have to manually press the button to change the setting after each start up to turn either system off. Not sure if this helps?

maybe i wasnt clear? the active handling used to have a mind of its own. now i cant get it to turn off. the button does nothing! anyone know which wires to cross to see if its just the switch thats bad? or any suggestions
thx mark
Have you tried pulling up the trim and checking the wires, it's easy to pop the trim out.
yes sir that connection is fine. so im driving down the freeway tonight and all the sudden "tract/active handling off" i must have pushed that button 100 times after that and it changed from on to off just as it should (did it driving 30 mph 70mph and stopped) its been said that the vehicle must be stopped to turn active handling off? i dont even know if its still broke or not
ok now its doing whatever it wants to (and it sure doesnt seem to know what it wants to do, changes back and forth 10-20 times per minute)
is anyone out there?
I'm interested in this too! I can't turn it off after my engine swap, the traction (on) and active handling (on) warning lights just stay on! I can't do a burnout from a dead stop!!!!! The pcm just retards my timing!!!! I can't seem to find a wire or plug that I have left undone or damaged!
Do you have any codes showing on the DIC when you run the On Board Diagnostic system? From the schematic it looks like the button feeds the BCM. The button is a momentary switch to ground of an input to the BCM at D15 C2. Once your finger leaves the button the switch is open. When the switch is open the input line is pulled to 12 Volts through a resistor in the BCM. You should be able to see this 12 volts on the Brn/Wht wire connected to the switch. When you push the switch it should go to zero.
I just bought my 99 Vette yesterday! It gets delivered Monday. I was told that the Active handling issue was a common problem on the C5. The display continually shows Active Handling Warming… it doesn't even turn on. The previous owner said there was a common ground problem. His explanation was that if I find the common ground it will fix most of the problems, including the Passenger window issue.
I’m looking for help also!

I'd be driving down the highway in a straight line, AH would come on and off, with right or left brakes deploying. very scary to have your car tug right or left at highway speeds. took 6 trips to the dealer, turned out to be the steering wheel position sensor, but never threw a code. I just had the luck of finding a tech who had seen the gremlin before

The car does not have to be stopped to turn active handling/ traction control off or on. It only has to be stopped to put it in "competitive driving" mode (Holding button down for 5+ seconds and dash will say competitive driving.) which turns off the traction control but leaves the active handling on. This is only on the '97-'00 cars, '01 and newer have upgraded electronics and will work on the fly.

the only current code is the c2115hc (i need to replace the left rear tire sensor)
Since you are not throwing the C1283, steering wheel sensor, your problem is the ground. On the 1997-98 models, there is a left rear ground by the exhaust that is very sensitive and some others near the engine. Search for grounds and there is a diagram of all the grounds in the c5 and several topics on locating and cleaning them...most of the issues with electronics not working right are associated with bad grounds.
im interested in this as well. I have a 99 coupe, luckily i dont have any problems with the TC or AH coming on during regular driving, but i cannot get the darn thing into competition driving..? ive tried holding the sucker down just not sure what is going on..!
