For those of you who decided to modify your stock airbox, please post up a pic if you have one. Also, if there are any quantifiable results, good or bad, please add these as well.
Trying to do this as a simple first step with my 98 coupe. Feedback is - as always - greatly appreciated.
I posted a flow test I did with my flowbench comparing stock and ported throttle bodies, MAF sensors, and stock airboxes on my 99 coupe. Do a search for "C5 Air Intake Modifications".
Saw this post, and to be honest, its what's driving me towards doing this mod.
On a side note - Thanks for posting such an informative and detailed thread. As a new Corvette owner, this is EXACTLY the kind of information that those of us who are new to Vette's need. If you ever get near Chitown, you've got a beer on me.
Back to the thread - I was looking for more guidance on how much material to remove, whether it be a square section, drill holes, tapered like the Z06 boxes, etc. I'm not sure about removing the whole lid, something about that doesn't seem right.
So who's done it - and what pics can you show me of it?
On mine, I bought a 2004 Z06 airbox lid and done the "swiss cheese" mod on the lower half. I used a 1" dia hole saw and just started to cutout holes as much as I can. I kept the holes evenly space for appearance. After I had accomplished this mod, I drove it out on the interstate and opened her up. I really felt a difference and can not quantify it though. I know it's much better. I'll try to post a picture later.
Talk about feeling a difference, I tried this after a few stock runs on the dyno and it picked up 6 hp and 7 ft-lb of torque. It probably could have been more if it weren't stationary in 98 degree heat.
My vette feels more powerful and has better throttle response now that it has adapted to it from the saturday dyno run.
I just bolted in a 2004 Z06 Air box cover to replace my stock one ('99 FRC) and can feel a slight difference when accelerating. I'm probably going to do a little 'swiss cheezing' on the lower 1/2 of the airbox cover to see if it's any more of an improvement. Also, If you open up an airbox or get an aftermarket Cold Air Induction system, get a hood seal. Keeps any water out from getting to the now exposed air filter element.
I cut the center out of my airbox (basically about a 5 x 7 hole, just inside all of the reinforcing ribs.
With just that mod, my 100K mile (at the time) M6 dynoed at 319 rwhp. Based on what other stock M6s were doing that day, it looks like it was worth about 7-9 rwhp.
No hood seal, and have had no problems with getting water into the K&N filter.
Next step I'm going to open up the fog light recesses to get more cold air to the intake.
