It's happened to me just that quickly. In fact, I had driven my car part way up my Kwik-Lift, turned it off to check the position on the ramp, got back in and all I got were clicking noises from the engine bay and the passenger side relay box. After trying to start the motor and just getting those clicking noises, the battery didn't even have enough voltage to run the stereo. Replaced with new battery and the car works fine.
One time it starts fine, with absolutely no hint of any battery issues. Literally less than 30 seconds later it wouldn't even try to turn the motor over. It was the original AC-Delco battery in my 2002, which died earlier this year.
Welcome to the dead battery club. Is it the original AC Delco or do you have an aftermarket. If its the AC Delco you had a longer run than most.
My AC Delco did the same. It lasted 8k miles. Not only did it die instantly but it was only 20 mins from shutdown to terminal failure Same symptoms; clicking relays and no turn over.
A quick battery swap should see you on the road again.
A cell can crack in the battery, which causese a break in the connection. This will seem like a dead battery one minute, then whe it makes connection will seem fine. Don't trust it if that is suspected as I guarantee you it will die for good on the darkest, longest, loneliest stretch of road when it $h!t$ the bed for good!!.
Another cause can be a bad connection in the wiring loop, usually at the battery terminals. Clean the terminals and have the battery tested with a draw down tester. It basically creates a dead short/full draw on the battery(safely through resistors) if the battery is weak it will drop below 10 volts quickly.
Just got back from breakfast 2 hours late!
Battery went dead in the restaurant parking lot when we were ready to leave. And I mean DEAD! No nothing. I never had a battery die without some hint of warning. It was so dead that I thought someone stole the dammed thing! It started up just fine at the house. Well it was the original OEM battery and it was 4 years old so figured it's time was up.
Went back inside and started asking around if anyone might have jumpers. A "Good Samaritan" had a set. We gave it a shot but to no avail. Just got the loud clicking noise. I needed a new battery.
The Good Samaritan actually took the time and drove me to to Checker Auto Parts to buy a new battery. $169. plus tax later we were on our way back to the restaurant with a new Exide Orbital battery.
Popped that thing in there and Vaarrooom! Back in business!
There are some nice people out there!
My little battery story.
