Im buyin some long tube headers and im trying to avoid putting cats on there... Does anyone know where i can get hooked up for passing smog in cali with out having the cats?
You got a couple of problems there. The long tubes aren't smog legal either. If they do a visual you will fail. If they do a visual for cats you will fail. If they just hook a puter to the diagnostic port you could pass with a proper tune (turn off the rear O2's)
What you need to do is find a county and a zip code within that county that does not require smog checks (and believe it or not there are quite a few left in California. I know quite a few people that have their unsmoggable cars registered at "friends" houses in those exempt zip codes. You can go to DMV's website to look at the map of the exempt counties and then search for zip codes/cities within those counties.
Other than that you need to find a tech that will look the other way or take a contribution or freebie cause he likes you or the car to pass it (and they can be found).
So, if I'm reading this correctly, if I change my registration from my house in San Joaquin county (95377) to my folks vacation house in Calaveras county (Copperopolis 95228) I won't have to get a smog check until I either:
A) sell the car -or-
B) get pulled over and sent to a referee station, or wherever they send you when they think you're illegal.
My parents don't have any cars registered there so they aren't sure one way or the other. Anyone in any of these outlying areas able to confirm or deny? Thank you.
here in texas the smog requirements aren't as insane. the last inspection i got, they just hooked up their computer to the car's computer to measure emissions.
If you want to avoid cats, your best bet is to install a pair of O2 simulators that replace O2 sensors. This will fool your computer into thinking it's burned off the approproate amount of fuel. You'll pass a diagnostic emissions testing and won't have engine trouble.
i don't know how borred the guys in cali are if they're willing to jack up your car to look under it, but then again i'm not familier with the california inspection process and how it differs from Texas
lol, here in Louisiana the guy that inspects my car asks if I bought it with me......He would just give me a sticker if I wanted. Sorry for being off topic, but that just sucks that they are such emission ***** there.
One of my buddies lives in cali though and just uses his parents address here in LA to get by all that crap. His car is registered in Louisiana.

for smog purposes, if you wanted to not run cats and still be clean, you could install a flamethrower exhaust kit. this would burn off excess fumes and give you a nice little afterburner flame from your pipes. Does the same thing as a catalytic converter, but looks so much cooler

Good luck!
do we have to worry about a visual here in Alb?
or do you go to an emmissions place that will "pass" you?

Sent you a PM...also recommend you replace the cats with hi-flow cats and turn off the rear O2 sensors ..

Correct! I used a Lake Tulloch address for years.
Getting pulled over and sent to a referee station would be rare. Generally a cop wont question where car is registered if pulled over. You would be ok, since in your case the registered no smog check address is the same last name you have also.
Just go into DMV when its time to register you car, fill out a change of address and go to the window and tell them this car is now registered in a no smog check area. Should be no problem.

I have a good friend that runs a new dyno smog test set up in Northern Ca. He told me fine for tampering with or passing a customers car is $25,000 and you lose your license to do smog in the US. because it is a federal thing. I have known of people who will pass the car using another cars read out but it is only with old and trusted friends and it is getting harder and harder each year. The number of exempt counties in Ca. is growing smaller. The north eastern parts are your best bet. I haven't lived in Ca. for a while so I'm not up on the latest news on this subject.

If you do this be sure that your drivers license is changed to that address also, some of the Leo's check your license address against the registration address and that might cause some trouble.

The website states that a smog check is required upon "initial" calif registration....does that mean the first reg in the new county?
or do you go to an emmissions place that will "pass" you?
I'm registered in a county not requiring a smog check.
As for a visual, the car is pretty low and I doubt they would jack it up to get under it. If I ever have to face a visual I'm gonna tack weld the cat heat shields to the exhaust pipes.

i see. i am registered in bernalillo but i do have hi flow cats. i wouldnt think that it would fail as long as no codes are thrown.

No, that refers to the car's first registration in the state of Ca. Once its in you can register it anywhere without a check if that place doesn't require the smog testing.

Last smog I had..shorty headers, hi-flow cats, X-pipe and a BBK air bridge. Only comment made was "hi-flow cats don't last as long as OEM cats" I passed the sniffer.
