If anyone has had this problem, what is the fix and how big of a job time wise.
Is this a known problem with the C5 that GM is aware of, and is it GM bill or mine?

It's a known problem.
Before you tear it down try what I did. I drained the oil out of the Diff. and replaced it with Red Line Gear Oil that I got at Advance Auto Parts.
I did this last year and so far so good. It's worth a try
From what I've heard it is a pretty common problem. Just had mine done. It was the O ring seal on the drivers side inspection plate. If you are still under warranty it is on GM, otherwise it's going to cost between 450 to 500 bones to get if fixed with the up graded O ring.
New O-ring gastket and sealant. Very common problem and I've had both sides of my dif. done under warranty. First time was around 20k, the second around 34k miles.
