Default Hypertech 3

I just bought a hypertech 3 from a member on here, and i was wondering if anyone could tell me the best setting to set it too. Also is there anything i can hurt with this. What is the best temp. to set the fans too, and the shift points. Any pointers will help.

About the only thing you can do is set the fans. When I dyno'd my 97 with and without the HPIII there was only a difference of 2 Horsepower. That is within the 1% accuracy of the dyno so the difference could just have been the difference between one run and another with no changes at all. Everything else on the car was stock including the air cleaner and filter.

I set mine on my '98 to the 160 thermostat setting as my stat is a 160* I upped the top speed to match my tires at 186mph I set the Rev limiter at 6600rpm's and set the shift firmness to 75% and set the Fuel setting to NON-RFG fuel setting(performance setting in line with good fuel 91 or higher octane) the shift point in 1st to +3 MPH and 2nd-4th at +6mph. I really felt the difference as it complimented my other bolt ons that I did it's actually what it really needed. Some time in the future when I'm done with bolt on's I will get a Dyno tune on it at the dyno shop but until then the Hypertech III is working my needs great!

10-12 horse power gain is what I got out of mine with a can of torco race fuel concentrate.. The problem with the hypertech is that it advances your timing and if you don't have enough octane the engine will start to knock at this point the Management system automatically pulls timing. You may even lose a few horsepower in some cases. Make sure you are not getting any pre-detonation. You may not be able to hear it with your ears either...

Thanks for the info! I have a few other questions, when you raised your rev limiter, did it automatically change at 6600rpms, or did you have to change the shift points to make it change there? Also how did you know how many mph to raise each gear? I could never figure that out. Also i thought that it was either 87 tune or 93 tune, i didnt know it had a NON-rfg fuel setting. Im not really sure what that is. i always run 93 so what should i set it too? Did you change your fan setting?

I always run 93 octane, so what would be the best setting for me?

I agree with the shift point changes and firmness setting. The top speed setting should just be left alone as the car has no top speed limit programmed into the computer. Be very careful with moving the rpm limiter out too far as bent pushrods aren't too much fun to get fixed. My understanding is that the LS1 stock rev limiter setting (6200 rpm) is set fairly close to the engine's safe mechanical limit. I wouldn't go over 6400 rpm which is still more than enough for those shift point increases (+3 and +6). You may even want to think about changing that 2-3 shift point to +2 mph and set the limiter to 6300rpm. Better safe than sorry.

Well my car shifts at 6000rpms, i thought that was the rev limiter?? Mine doesnt switch at 6200rpm. So if i raise the rev limiter to 6400, and change the shift points, will it switch on its own at 6400?? What is a good setting for the fans? i have the stock termostat, and why not go %100 on the shift firmness?

It should be somewhere around that price. If you plan on adding anything else to the car (intake, exhaust, cam etc.), you will be much better off. I say this because the majority of shops that tune cars will give you lifetime tuning.

Fill out your profile so we can see where you live.. Do you know if you are using an RFG gas or a non RFG gas? Big cities use RFG gas in the summer to reduce pollution levels. Some cities use it year round. Here in Dallas RFG gasoline is sold from MAY thru September.. If you are using the RFG setting on the programmer you should be ok, as this only slightly increases timing.. If you are using a non RFG setting on the programmer... Be aware... If you are putting in RFG formulated 93 octane the engine wil ping like a ****. You will be losing a ton of horsepower and tearing up your engine at the same time. I use Torco in the Summer months and have no problem. You need to know exactly what is going in your tank to take full advantage of the settings or you will not benefit or actually lose hp... Shift points and rev limiter settings I have messed with and found that my engine did best with these settings...
Rev limiter at 6400 rpm Shift points based on Axle Ratio 3.15:1
1-2 shift +2 = 6242 rpms
2-3 shift +3 = 6195 rpms
3-4 shift +3 = 6120 rpms Shift points will vary with 2.73 axle

i have an 02 LS1.. i moved the shift point to 100% and there's absolutly no problem. actually , i wish the trans shifts were even firmer. i put a trangsgo shift kit in the 700r4 in my 93 (the last they made for the vette) and it was ausome banging thru the gears.

I think you mean shift firmness? There is a difference between the 2 settings. Shift firmness is a setting that makes the shifts tightenup, kind of like a shift kit. Hypertech Shift Firmness settings go from stock to 25%-100% on shift Firmness settings... Shift point is a designated RPM setting which changes transmission gears at a certain RPM point.. 6000-6400 rpm. Your wording is confusing, Shift point and Shift firmness are 2 totally different things. There is no such thing as a 100% shift point. This is the kind of post that really confuses people. Not raggin on you, just trying to make sure everyone understands whats goin on..Shift point is a designated RPM and.. Shift Firmness is a % % percentage,, ..

Ok i think you and I have the same gears, because i was told that i have the 3.15's because my rpm is 2100 at 75 mph. But, i dont know about the gas. I dout that it is RFG, because i live in a small city. I do use 93 octane though. Anyways i dont get why you set the rev limiter to 6400 but it only shifts at 6242, 6195, and 6120 rpms??
