Default oil 15w40

I had a friend order in a case of amsoil for me. I thought I was getting 10w50, but he ordered 15w40. I'm going to Watkins Glen tomorrow and I'm changing the oil tonight. Should I use the 15w40, or just use the mobil 1 5w30?. I had mobil1 5w30 in the car last month at wgi and saw oil temps of 305, I'm hoping to keep it a little lower with the 15w40.

305!?! I just bought my car and haven't tracked it yet, but that sounds ridiculously high! Do you have an external cooler? If not, I would probably put one in...

I can't really comment on your original question though... I have a hot-rod of sorts and I have higher oil pressure and lower oil temp with 20w50 racing oil than 10w40 conventional oil. If I were tracking my car, I'd probably put a heavier oil in it. Makes sense to me - Bruce

I run Mobil 5w40 for HPDE events and found it superior to 5w30 during the summer while on the track. Personally, I think a w50 would be too thick. While I have no experience running 15w40; I would think that would be fine.

What does the owner's manual say?

I don't know how much the effect will be, but I would think the higher viscosity oil will have an even higher temperature because of greater drag.

I think an oil cooler should be in your near future.

I use 15-w50 March though Dec. and 0-w40 in Feb. with oil cooler and accu-sump

305 temp is way too high. Yes the oil can take that temps but the internal engine parts can not.

The magic number is 260. You start to see 260 and then short shift of slow down to get that oil temp down below 250.

If you track your car severl times a year, an oil cooler is highly advised to keep those oil temps 250 and under.

No the 50 weights have a far high heat shear rating, where 30 wt is broken down.

Default oil

Owners manual says 5w30 or if not in very cold environments 10w30
I have always uesd Mobil1 5w30. If you are racing the car use an oil cooler.
