Default oil change techniqe

I'm a new 'vette' owner, April. 99' coupe, Red, 30,000 mi. All original, (no mods yet) except new 'pilots'. My question is, what is the best way to lift to change the oil? I perfer to change myself verse 80 bucks. Thanks for your input

Congrats. I just got my first C5 a 99 also, last year. There are some stickie notes on oil changes and the appropriate way to jack the car. Check out this link:

http://www.c5forum.com/diy/oilchange.php

I put my car on four ramps. Drive up on fronts first and then jack up the rears one side at a time and put a ramp under the wheel. I keep two jackstand under the front cradle for back up!!!!

Welcome to C5 ownershihp. They are great. ALso read the sections at the top of the forum page on column locks, electrical eccentricities, etc.

I just did this today for the first time. I followed the instructions in this link http://www.corvettedreams.com/oil.htm .

Definitely get a 15mm box wrench for removing the drain bolt. I also replaced mine with a new bolt from the dealer... the new bolt was 13mm, fortunately I have a set of box wrenches.

I drove my rear wheels up on 2x10's to get the rear up high enough to jack. I also placed a 2x6 under the rear crossmember and on top of my jack. As long as you do not get under the car while it's up on the jack.. I think it's OK. I do have jack stands but elected not to use them for the oil change, just remember... absolutely do not get under the car while it's up on the jack.

A piece of cake once you do it once.

Congrats on your new C5. You might not want to spend $80 for an oil change, but for $80-$90, you can buy a full set of service manuals for your car. That way, you don't have to depend on the forum or people's opinions to properly maintain your car.

If you have a sloping driveway, it's a piece 'o cake.
  1. Back into the garage
  2. Place ramps in front of the car, on the downhill slope.
  3. Drive up onto the ramps so that you end up with the rear wheels still on level ground
Presto, your car is securely in the air, level, and with plenty of room to place the drain pan and work.

P.S. For safety, put the car in gear or Park, set the parking brake, and chock the wheels.

Thanks for the great tip. Simple enough. I'll give it a try.

Ok, very nice. But it is well known that level is just ok for draining the oil. You need to get the back of the car higher than the front to get all of the oil out. Use the ramps to get it up a little, the lift it up the rest of the way with a floor jack and put it on jack stands front and rear. 6 ton jacks in the back and 3 ton jacks in the rear.

I noticed on another thread that he was less than nice about someone asking a similar question.

Of course the time it took to write your response you could have actually added solid advice. Nice...

Got me sold, ramps in the front. drive the rears up onto 2 x 10's to get the jack under and jack up the rear as high as you need to get the oil to drain better. I will use 4 jack stands as well.

I just got a 99 as well about 3 weeks ago, all stock,RED and very cool.

Congrats to you....you added absolutely no value to this thread.

Now for the adults on here...get yourself a set of rhino ramps to lift the car safely. I say rhino ramps because they are designed for low cars. Youll need a 2.5 ton floor jack to jack the rear from the cross member so that the car will be level in the air. This will empty out all the oil that sits on the back of the oil pan.

I use 4 ramps.
  1. Drive up on the front ramps.
  2. Chock the front wheels.
  3. Lift the rear.
  4. Slide ramps under.

I now have 2 jacks so I usually leave one on the front and one on the back cross beam. Jack stands would be an alternative.

The oil filter is easily accessible from the driver's side while the oil pan plug is in the middle...
