Re: Does it help to turn key "On" before starting? (mozin)
I can't believe people are waiting seconds to start their engines just to let the electronics do their thing. Never before heard of such a procedure except for diesel engines.

I do it simply because I only want the PCM thinking of one thing when I turn the key to start...and that's starting the car. But that's just me.
Re: Does it help to turn key "On" before starting? (Gearhead Jim)
First I turn my V1 off when I turn the car off. I wait for all the gauges to cycle and DIC to quit scrolling to start, you may think it is crazy but ever since I started doing this I have no BS communication codes stored. I HATE codes :smash: Oh then as I'm pulling out of the garage the V1 goes back on.
Re: Does it help to turn key "On" before starting? (99 Torch Coupe)
I wait for the electronics to spool up. I never did before but every so often, maybe 1 out of 20 starts, the car would not start the first time. I would have to turn it over a second time to start it. Someone else posted that if you let the electronics full evaluate the status of the engine that it will have better luck starting. Since then, I have been waiting to start it, It has started on the first try every time.
Re: Does it help to turn key "On" before starting? (Gearhead Jim)
I have to wait anyway. The C5's computer controlled starting sequence has a built in delay between START and when the starter does its thing. I found this the hard way.
I tapped the keyed +12 line and Ground under the passenger kick plate to power my dual-band (VHF/UHF) ham rig. When I move the key from ON to START the computer checks down that line and turns the radio off (like the car radio). The extra time to complete this check causes a delay from START until the starter does its thing. When I first noticed this delay I took the car to the dealer and the delay went away when the ham rid was removed from the circut. It makes no difference if the ham rig is ON or OFF. If I break the GROUND connection, the car starts with no delay. The C5 electronics package is pretty smart!
I have leared to live with 1/2 to 1 second the delay. BTW, I do try to pause on ON until the instruments do their thing.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I don't think it matters. But I do let the temps come up before I take off. I have to preach this to the wife & kid on their vehicles, but they still don't listen. Nothing is worse on a car than not letting the temps come up properly.
Re: Does it help to turn key "On" before starting? (Gearhead Jim)
I like to watch the gauges do their thing. For $45K I need some entertainment. If I am in a hurry, I just fire it up. I can't tell any difference. I do keep the car at low rpms until it has had time to warm up. For the 1st mile or so you would think I was a little old lady. When the temp is up so is the speed.
Re: Does it help to turn key "On" before starting? (C5 Hardtop)
Just hit the key and go. It was made to do that. As for turning the radio off when starting you haven't had to do that since the late 50s or early 60s. Once they put an interlock in that shut down the accessories when the car was being started the need to shut off the radio went away. Its funny how some things just keep hanging around for no reason.

You should always wait a couple of seconds before starting any electronic fuel injected computer controled engine. It is like any other computer, it needs to boot up. :chevy

As a pilot, not a great thing to admit these days, I was always told, and am still on every prep for a check ride, to turn off all avionics, i.e., radios, before you start the engine. I would imagine it translates to a car as well.
