If you are using any of the "normal" filters like AC, Fram, whatever, the wrench is 74 - 76 mm or 3". Comes in a 4 pack at Harbor Freight for 5 bucks or O'Reilly single piece 74-76 for - you got it - 5 bucks. Use a 3/8" drive or a socket (think it's 3/4, but I never used one).

There is a spring loaded tool (big socket) that fits several sizes, I have one. Check your auto parts stores.

After 20+ replies and you still can't figure it out maybe you should take to a garage and let them change the oil.
This isn't rocket science!

OK guys. This is by far the best oil filter wrench made. I have 2 extra in my garage. Though not just like this one it works great. If anyone is interested I'll sell ya one of them for $15 shipped. You will never buy another filter wrench.

Anyways thanks again everyone. I went to the place that I bought my Baldwin filters from and they had an end fitting wrench cup that fits real snug......can't wait to change my own filter again.

BTW: I used to change my own oil on my 84 vette without ramps/jack or nothin !!!!!!!!

...if you discover that the new cup "wrench" does/eventually slips a little when onto the filter, apply a strip of duct tape or masking tape (to the filter end) and re-install the "wrench"...it'll take the filter off. I think the plastic composite material gets slippery or friction/heat from the filter eventually enlarges the ID of the fluting...

Another way is is to use liquid plastic coating. It's sold as tool handle dip and as liquid electrical tape. Rough up the surface of the cup type filter tool, degrease it, and paint on the rubber coating. It will grip that filter like a wrench.

Howie,
Save yourself the aggravation. Get one of those pliers type that's sold by almost every auto parts store around. It's kinda like an oversized Channel-Lock type, but without the Channel-Lock price. The thing will open up to almost any sized filter and has a short row of teeth near the end of each jaw for gripping the filter. Very inexpensive too. Somewhere in the $8-$12 range and sold under a variety of brand names. I gave up on cup type and strap types awhile back.
When installing the new filter, I just make sure my hands are clean (for a good grip) and screw the filter as tight as I can using one hand only.
Works great.

Well, if and when my nice new little cup type ever fails me I got a lot of options.

Thanks again everybody....
