Default Steering speed sensors

I am setting codes 1281 and 1287 from the TCS module on my 98 A4. The listing show this as steering sensors. Does anyone know where the sensors are located, and how I can test them?

TIA
Dave

Do you have RPO JL4 Active Handling (not adjustable suspension) or do you just have Traction Control? The C1281 and C1287 fault diagnostics are different depending on whether or not you have AH.

PM me if you want the diagnostics.

The steering wheel sensor is located at the base of the steering column against the floorboard just above the brake pedal. It will be a ring around the steering column with a connector at 9 o'clock.

Try unplugging and replugging the connector - sometimes that will solve the problem.

I have had this issue for a while. I just unplugged my ebcm connector back under the car near the exhaust, and cleaned and added silicone grease, then installed it. Also I unplugged and replugged the ECM connections and the problem has dissappeared for over 200mi so far.

I too was getting a 1281 code. I had a new steering position sensor installed last week and the problem is gone!
