Default No Compromise Stock Driveability Cam Limits

Hi,

At what intake/exhaust duration and lobe separation angle do aftermarket cams start to exhibit LOW rpm bucking? Is there a cam that makes 20-40hp, but still lets you puts along at 800-1500rpm in 6th, without bucking/surging?

I bough my first Vette, a used BONE STOCK 2002 Z06. And I'm just amazed how the car drives so well in traffic. My 1991 Mustang LX had a SMALL 214/220,114 cam in it, and it bucked below 1400rpm, and so did the 218/226,112 cam I had. I keep expecting the ZO6 to do the same, but it is just such a pleasure to drive in traffic.

I guess I want my cake and I want to eat it too

Oh, I also won't do the cam, until I put the LG Pro Longtubes/Cat-Xpipe on the car. I figure they will offset the very low idle to 1500rpm torque lost from the aftermarket cam, and more

You are going to get so many opinions on this subject. No matter what anyone says a non stock cam is going to have different idle and low rpm driving characteristics than stock. I don't have a large cam, rarely it will buck a little at low rpm. It idles at 900 rpm and rarely gets cam surge.

The drivability issues will mostly be in how good your tuner is.

generaly a 224/224 114lsa is mild and not much issue for DD.

My cam has all the characteristics you mention. It's tune is still off, but it does idle and pull smoothly from idle. BTW, it's a Crane 228/232 @112+5

I have a Comp 228/232 114 set back one degree. Idles at 700-800, no bucking down to 1200 rpm. I agree the drivibility rests with the tuner you select.

There are cams out there that fit the bill. some were already mentioned. you may want to consider one of MTI's stealth cams. keepm in mind once you get your header/cams, you will not achieve low end torque until you get a good tune

I don't know what will work, but I know the LG G5X3 114lsa does not have what you are looking for. I have one in a ls1 and If I drop much below 1200 It starts to strugle. Mine is not a daily driver. I love the rough idle and the explosion of power is awesome when you lean on the pedal. Help this narrows the search.

Thanks for all the replies.

Does anyone have one of these small Stealth cams, like the MTI 220/220 or 224/220 or the CheaTR, which is a 214/230.

If the cam is going to buck/surge a little, then maybe it makes sense to max out the cam to within smog limits, which appears to be about 228/232, 114, like the G5X1/G5X1E.

Thanks again for the real world input.
