While driving around today my check engine light went on. I pulled over, shut the car off and turned it back on. This didn't help. I thought maybe it was a computer glitch. What causes this? Can I fix it myself or do I have to bring it to the dealer? I was wondering if I disconnect and reconnect the battery if that would do anything.
Thanks
Nick
There are several things that can bring this in. Here's a link to the codes to help identify what caused the problem and also how to reset the alarm.
Here's the link: http://www.stengel.net/diccodes.htm

Follow the instructions in this link to look at and then erase your fault codes:
Once you erase the codes drive it and see if the light comes back on or stays out, if it comes back on then check your codes again to see if you have any of the same faults.

Make sure your gas cap is on tight! That can cause a check engine light. If loose tighten and drive it a little bit and it may go out. Sometimes its the little things.
Recently I bought a tankful of BP Ultimate gasoline ( no Shell station available), the next day the check engine light came on... after clearing it kept coming on with a lean right and left bank codes.
If you run into a tank of gas that is high in Ethanol, it can lean out theengine and cause the check engine light to come on.....

Will E85 go lean because the pulse width and injector capacity are insufficient or is there some other factor at work? Because this stuff burns like 108 octane gasoline, being able to run it reliably might open some tuning opportunities for engines with higher compression.
