"Help!
The steering wheel unlocks, but once I move the car the fuel cuts off.
Is it the dreaded column lock failure?
I'm an auto tech, so if someone can give me specific advice I can probably fix this thing myself.
I'm in the Army, and need to be at school in the morning. It's ten hours before I need to be there and it's a three hour drive.
Please call 270 234 3676 if you can help."
Need to know what modifications and/or recalls have been done on the column lock system.
If the wheel does not lock, either the actuator is in the unlocked position (and disconnected because an aftermarket CLB has been installed), OR the recall has been done to remove the lockplate.
If the lockplate has been removed, and the Harness K installed, then it is likely a defective relay in the harness. You could try removing the panel below the steering column and reconnecting the actuator. If the actuator still works, then you can leave the harness out and the car should start and run.
If an aftermarket column lock bypass has been installed, and the column does not lock because it is disconnected in the unlocked position, then it is possible that the CLB relay has failed. You could try to reconnect the actuator to check the relay.
If either relay has failed and the actuator will not still cycle when you reconnect it, then you need to have the dealer replace the GM harness K, or contact the aftermarket supplier for a new CLB relay.
