Default HUD INSTALL has double vision

I had purchased a HUD kit off the Forum here back in the summer, but I just recently got the car up and running. I have noticed that it has a double vision (vertical). Is this because I don't have the HUD windshield? I'm thinking maybe it's because of the laminate in the windshield.

I know there is a significant difference in the price(about $350-400 if I remember correctly) of the hud and non-hud windshields. As far as your problem, I couldn't say what is causing it other than the windshield.

It's not the windshield. I just installed a HUD in my 98 and it's fine.
Something is wrong with the projector. Maybe a cracked mirror or something. Take out the projector and pull off the clear plastic cover and see if anything rattles or looks broken.

I wonder if a cheap aftermarket windshield could cause this?

Default hud

sounds like focus.
look at the hud closely and see if there's alignment screws.
the unit may have been jarred in shipment

It's possible that it's the windshield. For the most part the non-HUD windshield works just fine, but your laminate in the windshield may be enough to throw off the second image. With the non-HUD windshield there is a reflection from each pane of glass. If the laminate is bending the light enough, it can show as two images. That's the reason for the HUD windshield to begin with.

With my luck lately, it will probably be the most expensive one. Here is a pic of what I see. You guys let me know what you think. Windshield or HUD display.

Get a mirror. Put it on the windshield at the same angle. That will tell you real quick whats going on. Maybe even a reflective piece of metal since some mirrors can also make it look like a double image. Point is, get something else to reflect the image.

The other thing I would do is go back and check the physical installation to make sure the projector is where it is supposed to be. A slight error in vertical placement could cause focus problems.

I'll check it out when I take it out. It's actually focused, I think it's just picking up a second image, like a reflection. I just don't know why. I'm going to put a mirror in front of the windshield if I can find one and see if it gets the same image. It's probably something simple.
Looking at the pics I took, I can even see a third image. Each image is about half as bright as the other. It's like it's reflecting back and forth. But I guess maybe something inside could have got knocked out of alignment. It's hard to believe anything shipped would get damaged.

Most members seem to have no problems with the non HUD windshield.

That said, that looks like refraction through the glass to me. The mirror trick mentioned above will tell you whether it's glass or focus.

Smart thinking!! I would say it is the windshield, if it were a cracked mirror only some of your image would shift up. Becasue it's a constant shift it appears as though the above post was correct. What's happeneing is the light is hitting the first layer of glass and posting the image, the light continues through the laminate, when light travels through any medium it bends, the more dense the medium the more it bends, hence the reason diamonds "glitter" What's happening there is the light gets within the diamond, and becasue of the cut and the density of the stone, the light gets "trapped" within the stone. It keeps "bouncing" off of each side of the diamond. The light is bending so much it keeps reflecting within the stone and that's why you get the "glitter". So what's proably happening witht eh laminate is that the laminates density is much lower than the windshield and the light is hitting the glass, bending up, then hitting the laminate and bending back down, posting the lighter image on the second pieces of glass. But like the above person posted, put a mirror there and that will tell you for sure!! Good Luck, Dan

I know someone mentioned this, but do you have a Factory Windshield or a replacement aftermarket?
If a replacement which Brand, it should say so on the windshield.

I bought the car with 42k miles on it. And Carfax showed no accident. But that doens't mean a rock hasn't hit the windshield. I went and looked on the glass, and this is the information I got on it. Does anyone know if this is GM or an aftermarket?
