Violent Transmission Slip
I just joined the corvette family this March with a 1998 6-speed with 7k miles on it. The car is great but for the entire time I've had it the transmission has acted very weird. When I shift into 4th gear sometimes the transmission will violently throw the shifter out of gear back into neutral. This doesn't happen all the time but when it does it's a very discomforting sound and I know it can't be good. Has anyone had this happen to his or her car? I appreciate the feedback!
You might want to have that problem looked at pronto.

On to your question; I assume you have the stock shifter? If it's an aftermarket unit they might have left the blocking screws in place, preventing the transmission from fully shifting into 4th. Does 4th feel the same as the other gears?
There is also an issue with the shift forks in the older cars. The previous owner may have played "Ricky Racer" and slammed the transmission through the gears one too many times. Could be a bent shift fork, which will require replacement.
There are other possibilities as well; best bet is to cal Rodney at RPM Transmissions, he is a guru with the T-56. Good luck.

Do get it fixed ASAP because every time it does this it's getting more metal shavings into the transmission oil.
