Default Violent Transmission Slip

Hello,

I just joined the corvette family this March with a 1998 6-speed with 7k miles on it. The car is great but for the entire time I've had it the transmission has acted very weird. When I shift into 4th gear sometimes the transmission will violently throw the shifter out of gear back into neutral. This doesn't happen all the time but when it does it's a very discomforting sound and I know it can't be good. Has anyone had this happen to his or her car? I appreciate the feedback!

Stangkiller had that problem - and we ended up on a flatbed 300 miles later. One of his driveshaft bolts sheared off and got lodged in his torque tube.

You might want to have that problem looked at pronto.

A 98 with 7K miles?? Jeez, these cars were not manufactured to sit in a garage. You might be concerned about dried-out seals, etc. Make sure this car receives regular exercise from now on.

On to your question; I assume you have the stock shifter? If it's an aftermarket unit they might have left the blocking screws in place, preventing the transmission from fully shifting into 4th. Does 4th feel the same as the other gears?

There is also an issue with the shift forks in the older cars. The previous owner may have played "Ricky Racer" and slammed the transmission through the gears one too many times. Could be a bent shift fork, which will require replacement.

There are other possibilities as well; best bet is to cal Rodney at RPM Transmissions, he is a guru with the T-56. Good luck.

Sounds like a bad synchronizer or possible bent shift fork, DO NOT TRY TO HOLD IT IN GEAR. It can result in a broken wrist.
Do get it fixed ASAP because every time it does this it's getting more metal shavings into the transmission oil.
