Two days ago, I had a DTE 3.90 rear w/ strut brace installed. While on the lift I had the oil changed w/ 10w30. Using 5w30 oil my pressure would read about 45-50psi at idle with a ported LS6 oil pump. The oil pressure is higher now with the 10w30 (55-60psi at idle) and tends to increase rapidly with an increase in rpm range. It hasn't spiked yet, but I haven't really gotten on the car w/ the new rear end yet (7 miles). I'll get a better idea this weekend when I go for a cruise to accumulate mileage.
The questions: What pressure should I typically see w/ 10w30? Will the pressure be greater using a ported oil pump? Is it possible to damage the sensor by switching to 10w30 that quickly (I don't forsee this happening) or is it just coincidence?
I did a search prior and found a few results regarding spiking oil pressures & bad sensors. Thanks for any input.
Why are you using 10W30 when the car is designed for 5w? 5w30 mobil1 is what its designed for, thicker oil is not always better, esp if you're already seeing higher values than normal. Old smallblocks aren't the same as the new LS motors.
There are tons of posts on viscosity and oil types to use....but I'm pretty sure everyone agrees that 5w30 is the way to go for LSx DD's and track cars.....
10W-30 here as well. Those are in line with what I see. 5W-30 is fine for stock, but when you start pushing 500+hp at the motor the 10W-30 adds a little protection. I saw somewhere that Linenfelter recommended 10W-30 to 15W-50 in the head/cam cars and blower/turbo C5s depending on outside temps...

I use 10-30 as well, but may start blending some 10-30 with some 15-50 to thicken it up a tad. Here in Tx when the oil get's hot (201*+) the oil pressure is a little lower due to the oil becoming a little thinner.
I see 28-32 psi at idle when it's hot. (non-stock engine)
BTW, if you have a rebuilt motor won't the bearing clearances affect oil pressure too? - so many things to consider.
I just go done w/ a brief drive period. At cold start - Idle = 55psi. Driving around Oil Temp = 110*, 64psi. Oil temps >160* = 44-48psi idle & 60+/- at low rpms. Still on the rearend break-in period.
FWIW, the dyno number are bolt ons w/ stock heads. Not technically a fully built motor, but pushing plenty of power to the ground.
