Default Lazy Gas Gauge

My gas gauge in my 98 works sometimes then sticks sometimes. Anyone else have this problem? I can't rely on it during trips. It will get stuck at 3/4 tank when its full then I'll look down again and see its on the full peg. What worked for you? Would like to do this while its down for the winter. Thanks

Which brand of gas are you using? Chevron gas may fix this problem. Ad a can of Techron then top off with the Chevron gas. Good luck

Thanks Sleeper. No Chevron's around me. I have used all kind of different brands of fuel and never noticed a differece. Anyone else have this problem ? Just wondered if the sending unit has to come out of the tank? Thanks

Last week I had an issue with mine and couldnt figure it out. I was driving with a full tank then the gauge went all the way over to empty. the cpu kept telling me low fuel. It stayed this way for about 3 days then just started working like normal. Wish I know what had happened incase something is going out.

I had this problem on my '03 Z06. I tried Techron and several different brands of premium fuel and it kept coming back. After reading around on the forums, it sounded like it was a common C5 issue. I had the fuel sensor replaced by the dealer 4 months ago and haven't seen it since. Luckly it was covered under my GMPP warranty or it would have been around a $1300 job at the dealer.

I can only use Chevron gas.

A couple of tanks of Shell juice will cause the gauge to fail every time.

Techron will fix the gauge (for the times I have had to fill up with something other than Chevron).

Gracias Chevy...you kinda suck.

I use SHELL but Chevron and Texaco have the same additive. Stopped my gage problems.

I normally use Sunoco Ultra 93

Was in a bind, I used Lukoil gas, had the problem, went back to Sunoco on the next fill, went away!

I've also heard about using fuel dryer.

get some Red Line injector cleaner. To start dump a whole bottle in a full tank. After that add a dose for 20 gals every fill up. You'll be able to put dragon **** in your tank and your gage will be fine.

I see lots of advice about Techron, so here is another thought.

Are you squeezing in a little extra fuel after the shut off is hit and the pump automatically stops? If so, that could be the problem. Modern fuel systems are designed to be full at the shut off. Adding more fuel forces the tank sensor. Not good, according to tech stuff that I have read. Try the Techron and stop fueling when the shuff off is hit, if you habitually add a little.

I was having issues with my earlier C4 and started that routine. Never had another problem. Same for my 4Runner.

Wait a minute. The fuel pump shuts off when the fuel level reaches the fuel filler nozzle. Are you trying to say the the ftank sensor unit is higher in the filler tube than the nozzle? Adding an extra few ounces of gas will have no effect whatsoever. His problem is sulfer buildup on the rheostat mechanism of the sending unit. In other words, its got crud on it.
