In the interest of C5 science, I'm going to take the MAF apart and see if I can get a measurement on the inside.

Ah, we have a winner. Thanks to both EHS and Red99 for the suggestion.

The 78mm value for the early MAFs is derived from the OD of the center piece of the MAF.

Sorry, in my feverish quest to solve this buring issue, I overlooked ya.

BTW, for those interested, this all started when I pulled out an old descreened MAF and my DSM friend looks at it and says "Oh yea, that's 3.5" MAF" Knowing (at least at the time, thinking, I knew) it was an older 78mm one I called BS, cause 78mm doesn't == 3.5"; 78mm is actually ~3.".
Out came the calipers...and the rest is CF history.
