Have a 2001 coupe with 610 miles. At 500 miles the traction light came on as well as the service vehicle soon- service active handling message. The dealer checked it & said that their was a tsb out to just reset it. Now I have 610 miles on it & am getting the same message. Going back to the dealer again, will they just reset it again. The first time they took nothing apart & just reset it. The code coming up is c1288h. Any ideas, still debating with them on the front defroster which they say is also normal, gives very little air but lots of noise.
Took it out for a ride to see if it is still there as the dealer can't see the car till next Wednesday, still same message after driving a few minutes, traction light on. Don't know if this matters but it cannot be put into competive drive mode while driving now but with the motor off key accessory switch on it can be put into the competive drive mode. When I spoke with the dealer they said that they clear the codes & if it does not come back right away it is okay. This is the 2nd time, how many more times before they fix it instead of reseting according to their logic.
Before I had the service active handling message I was able to put it in the competive mode by holding the button down 5 seconds while driving but now it will not go into it only traction control on/off with the button, holding it down 5 seconds does nothing. If car is standing still it will go into the competive mode holding the button down 5 seconds. Got the feeling that the dealer will just reset it & it will happen again.
I see this alot on the 2001-02 and there have been many posts on this...Here is the deal...If your C-5 was produced before 11/30/00,there is a calibration change for the EBTCM to correct the 1288 code as per a TSB along with a VIN cutoff (will post later)...
If you are after the date or cutoff, here is the deal as per my conversation with TAC the other day...The 1288 code is caused by a "green" (new) steering position sensor. The new sensor can cause voltage spikes until it is broken in causing the 1288 code. There seems to be some validity in this in that I am seeing this on many occassions on 2001-02 with low mileage (under 1,000)...Up to now,I thought it had to do with the EBTCM having to "learn" the sensor, but this is not the case. How long does it take to break in the sensor???Who knows...I have seen many posts where the message appeared on one or a few occasions, then never returned...The problem here is,if you replace the steering sensor, you are starting with a "green" sensor all over again  and the possibility of still getting a message...
Technical assistance states that if you are getting a 1287 and 1288 code, replace the sensor. If you are only getting the 1288 code,I would recomend that you put some more miles on the car to see if this breaks in the sensor, rather than having your column removed to replace the sensor...Hope this all made some sense ;)
