Default How to Clean MAF (one with the screen)???

I was down on power on the dyno, (About 30-35 hp) so I loooked at my air filter and it was a dirty black mess . Cleaned that and it has been drying since last night. Hope this helps

Now on to the MAF. I took it off to inspect it, you can only see ONE side of the wires, because I have a screen on one side.

It doesn't loo overly dirty? But the outside of the screen has some type of dried stains on it? oil, or maybe just a wear in the screen material that changed to a different color???

Lets get to my question:

1.. OK MAF is OFF, want to clean it just in case. I searched and it said electronics cleaner from Radio Shack??? Is this right?

2. I would only be able to spray/clean 1 side (the side facin g the tb) since the other side of the MAF where the AIR is actually flowing into has a screen on it.

Do I spray the SCREEN as well??????????? or just the one side?

Also any tips on exactly how much to spray. I know not to touch it!!

Thanks

Gary

I just did this two days ago. It's pretty simple actually. Get any spray electrical contact cleaner (the kind that does not contain lubricants, as it will leave a residue behind). Use the nozzle tip extension, and spray both sides liberally. The screen is fairly sturdy, but you don't want to touch the sensor wires.

are the sensor wires, the Larger steel pins inside the maf that strech the entire length of the MAF, OR are they the very thin delicate wires that are almost shaped like an oblonged "U" (very delicate) that strees across the (2) main metal pins/maf wires.

So you actually stuck that attachment in the screen openings (the tiny holes) and sprayed the cleaner from the screen side as well?

What do you spray exactly? All the exposed wires/metal Pins inside ther MAF

THANKS............

I looked in the MAF, there are 2 Main bars horizontal in the Maf and then another 1/2 of a BAR.

If you look inside the MAF from the OPEN side it almost looks Like (3) bars on one side (Left) , and (2) Bars on the other (Right)>

This is what you spray?

Also, any specific name brand cleaners? AND where did you buy them at?

You want to spray everything that the air would pass over (i.e., all interior surfaces). The nozzle extension is only to focus and concentrate the spray blast... you don't actually touch anything with it.

HTH!

No I know you do n't TOUCH anything. I just wanted to make sure YOU sprayed from the Screen side in order to get the front of the MAF wires cleaned. The screen blocks it, but I just wanted to make sure it was OK to spray into the screen.

Thansk Again Guys!!

UPDATE. Guys, went to O'Riely Auto Parts here in Lewisville (Near Dallas, TX) They had the exact type listed above. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

I sprayed it on BOTH sides, including right through the MAF Screen. It didn't look dirty, but who knows. I cleaned it and will reattach it when my air filter drys off and I lightly oil it.

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!

I would spray the cleaner from the back side first, so if there is any crud in the screen, it will be flushed out, and away from the sensor. Once you have the screen clean, you can spray it from the front to clean the front of the sensor wire. I don't base that on any personal experience. It's just how I would do it if I had to.

That is what I did. The wires look clean from the non screen side. I mean No Major Visible Black Stuff was showing. On the Screen side you can't get a clear look, but that is the side that would have had more Dirt onm it since that is the way the air flows into the maf. Through the screen into the throttle body.

I cleaned my airfilter as well which was FILTHY so hopefully the combined output of cleaning both will be realized.

I was down 30-35 rwhp on the dyno recently and was trying to figure out WHY. My car should be around 395-400 rwhp and it was 360.

I had a broken valve spring that was replaced (actually did the whole set was replaced) so I thought there might have been valve float/dammage................I just hope it was something simple like a dirty clogged air filter and a slightly dirty MAF.

Lucky I had DUAL Springs as the inner spring held up

Thanks

The hardest part of cleaning the MAF was getting the electrical connector to come unplugged on the the MAF.........

You shouldn't use brake cleaner on the newer style with the integrated IAT sensor. It can craze the plastic.

It's probably okay for the older 3-wire style with the metal ends.

Two Guys Garage did this this past weekend. They used the CRC product and said to be sure it is dry before reinstalling it and firing it up.
