Default Adjusted my Shift Linkage... WOW what a difference!

I have had issues getting into reverse for some time now... So I decided to do the Linkage adjust....

Pulled the console
Put the alignment pin in.. er... I lost it so I used a drill bit..

Losened the 3 Torx #40 bolts.. Wiggled the shifter to get everything to slack.. I mostly noticed that the Torx behind the shifter that attached to the linkage rod is where it made the difference.. Tightened it all back down.. Viola!!

The Shifter sits now perfectly straight up and down and now and shifts into each gear butter smooth!!

Here is a pic a vadered from another site.. NOT my car...

I think you are on to something Charlie. I put a C6 shifter in mine and found that it now goes into the gears easier. The only way that could be is that the new shifter is aligned slightly different than the C5 shifter was.

I should try this on my car since sometimes I have a hard time getting it into reverse also.

While you have the shifter apart......lubricate the shaft that runs through the shifter block, they have been known to dry out.

Is there someplace that tells exactly what to do to pull the console? I know it seems like a dumb question, but I always worry about breaking some little tab off or something.

Default One step further

Here's a tweak to the shifter adjustment if you're still having a bit of trouble or if you're ****!

I was back to square one... So I took a break, and when I came back i decided to totally remove the shifter box and analyze this problem. Once I removed the shifter I noticed that there is a half moon shaped cut out on the shift shaft that the 3rd torx bolt goes through. This cut out prevents the shift shaft from completely coming out of the clamp if the bolt got loose, and is obviously, exactly where the bolt is designed to go through the clamp.

What I did was I installed the shifter box back with only the 2 torx that hold it to the tunnel finger tight and left out the 3rd torx completely. I took a flash light and shined it down the hole.
where the bolt goes in the clamp. It turns out that the cut out on the shift shaft can be a milimeter forward of the clamp or a milimeter aft of the clamp and the bolt will still go into the clamp fine and you can tighten it in any of these positions. Thus the 2 milimeters of play.

I made an educated guess that the cut out on the shaft should be EXACTLY aligned with the hole in the clamp (not a bit forward or back even though the bolt will still fit)
so I aligned the cut out on the shaft so perfectly that when you shined a light down the hole the cut out on the shaft was not even noticeable. You could just see a pefectly round hole. I then tightened the 2 torx on the torque tube to spec and checked to see if anything moved. Nothing moved and the shaft cut out was still perfectly aligned with the hole in the clamp that holds the 3rd torx. I carefully placed the 3rd torx in the clamp and since the it was so well ligned up it I could tighten it with my fingers (up to a point of course) then I carefully thightened it to spec (22 ft pounds) trying not to place any down pressure on the bolt, just rotational pressure enough to get to spec.

Great info Tim.. That was the procedure I was looking for last night.. I remembered seeing it. but could not find it again.. Luckily I was fine..

What happened on my was shifter was tilted to the right.. like it was in the 5-6 gate before it was tightened.. When I pulled it out you could see that little "cup" where the bottom of the shifter goes was tilted to the right...

When I losened the 3rd bolt.. and wiggled it a bit.. it went back to being perfectly level.. Now my shifter sits perfectly straight..

I also plan to do the AntiVenom mod..I don't want to take ALL the notchiness out of my shifts.. just a little...

This is good information, thanks. When I installed my BPP shifter about two years ago, I loved the short throws, but the notchiness was even worse than with the stock shifter. I assumed they all did that, and I just had to live with this. I've just bought a C6Z shifter, and was hoping it would improve the hesitation between gears, but with this information, I'm gonna try and adjust the BPP shifter first. When I installed it in the first place I don't remember doing anything to the torx bolts at all. BTW, I've already done the trans plug mod, and changed the fluid to Royal Purple to no avail.

I'm glad I didn't say something about the monkey(dog) first. But that shifter is short as hell. Maybe you should bring it to EG's mod party.

I am too... let me know if you end up using one or two washers, I've heard of people doing it either way.

Thanx!!
