I have a 98 A4 with the 3.15's. As the diff is leaking slightly (common, I know...) I thought as long as they were going to R&R that, this would be a good time to go to 3.73's.
My question is this ---- there is a really good Corvette and Mustang racing shop available to me. Can the gears be changed by a competent mechanic or is the alignment of the ring and pinion so critical that it would be best to purchase an entire diff and have them install that?

I got mine change and they are perfect, no whine. It all depends on the person changing them.
Since yours is a 98 I would recommend buying a new diff- a little over a $1000 and selling your 3:15s to some one with an a4 who has 2:73s. That way you will have new gears, posi, bearings, plus not have to worry about the setting up of the new gears in your old diff. Andy at A&A did mine and I sold the 3:15 diff here on the forum. Also the labor is less to change a diff compared to pulling one apart and installing the new gears. Godd luck with what ever you choose to do.
